Feeling Ecstatic

Meet Strawberry Bud, our new Paint mare!

Dakota, the Bashkir Curly mare we were leasing, was just too smart and wily for two girls with limited horse experience. She is the lead mare in her band, and very dominant. She buffaloed them easily.

We switched our lease over to Strawberry Bud, a Paint mare who is very tractable and easy on the ground. She has lots of energy under saddle but does not buck. The girls are enjoying leasing her a great deal. I do not have to worry about them getting kicked when they turn her lose. She is very laid back on the ground.

The best part is, I was heartbroken over not being able to handle Dakota....but I don't have to give her up! We have bonded, and she comes to the fence for me to scratch her butt and feed her carrots. She is so intelligent, you can just see it in her eyes as she watches everything around her. Under saddle she has learned to neck rein very quickly, and I enjoy her intelligence and responsiveness. She has slowed down to a very comfortable jog trot under the western saddle, and I am working on dropping her nose. She really wants to be a one person horse. It irritated her to have three or four people riding her. Her owner, Mel, said that I can continue riding her and loving on her, so now we have two horses that we can ride at the same time! It is wonderful! (I am selfish. I enjoy that I get to ride her and the girls don't. It makes training so much easier.)  Also, there is a beautiful bay Bashkir Curly Mickey, that I am starting to handle some, so I am very happy with all the horse therapy in my life. :-)  He is very head shy, but has the most expressive, intelligent eyes. He loves peppermints. These Curlys are the smartest, most personable horses I have ever met in my life.  They have a very interesting personality that is unique to them.

Although I love riding, I enjoy just BEING with horses the most. I like to smell them, lean on them, brush and cuddle them. They are wonderful companions, and so wise in their own way. They create a wonderful bond between the girls and me, and a day at the barn quickly eases anytensions that have been building up the family.

Shelby had always favored Strawberry out of all the horses in the whole farm, so she was especially delighted.

Strawberry looks like a cutie.  Sometimes a less bright horse is perfect.  Especially for those who are learning!  Or maybe just one who doesn't mind babysitting!  Our best horses at camp were not dumb, just willing to have mistakes made in their presence.  And most were of voting age or above!  That certainly helped!
