October 2005

Here are the Guest Editor's Picks for Oct. 28, 2005:

Our Guest Editor this week is Gabreael, whose featured blog is
Gabreael's Body, Mind &  Spirit Journal. Here are her top blog picks:

* Paranormal Magazine
* RRRGroup
* Why Be Normal, When You Can Be Paranormal!
* My Way
* Ghost in My Life
* Eastern Paranormal

Gabreael has gone with a Paranormal theme, which fits in with the season, seeing as how everyone has ghosts on the mind this time of year.

Here are the
Guest Editor's Picks for Oct. 21, 2005:

Our Guest Editor this week is Laura, whose featured blog is
Adventures in Juggling (of the sort with five kids and a job in a neonatal ICU, not clubs and beanbags); you can see her top blog picks:

* Halloween Cookbook
* Talking to Myself
* Fantasy Football
* Arielle's Red Sox Blog
* Thoughts of a Marine
* CarnivAOL

Laura started off with a fall theme, though she also tried to push the envelope and find some new stuff out there.

Here are the
Guest Editor's Picks for Oct. 14, 2005:

Our Guest Editor this week is Omar, who for some reason is really keen on having the title "Editor at Large." His featured blog is
Detached and Indifferent Expressions, and you can see Omar's top blog picks in his blog entry:

* Rant-O-Rama Diner
* So Much More
* These Are the Days of Our Lives...
* HAH!
* Jackie's Quirky Musings
* Better Than Kicking the Dog

Omar chose a theme (of sorts) of bloggers who are "Quirky Blurts": Quirky is self-explanatory, and the Blurts comes from the fact that they're not afraid to say the first thing that pops into their heads. (Not that they have more than one head. Per person.)

On an administrative note, apologies to
Denielle and Jodi, our two most recent Guest Editors, for a little slip-up: I forgot to change one of the main page links to the Guest Editor's blog from the prior week, so some folks who hit that link went to Jodi's Journal when they should have been going to Denielle's.

Here are the
Guest Editor's Picks for Oct. 7, 2005:

Our Guest Editor this week is Denielle, a genuine Jersey girl who does computer stuff for Uncle Sam and is also a part-time EMT. Her featured blog is
This Is Me, and you can see Denielle's top blog picks in her blog entry:

* My Big Fat Geek Life
* Rita's Journal
* Cubby's Rants and Raves
* The StupidSheet Guy
* Gettin' By in Life...
* Holding On & Letting Go

Denielle is sticking with home state favorites, choosing a theme of New Jersey Journals -- bloggers who have ties to the Garden State.

June 2005

Here are the Guest Editor's Picks for June 24, 2005.

This week, our Guest Editor is Paul, keeper of
Aurora Walking Vacation (among others). Here's the direct link to his blog entry, where he goes into more detail about his top blog picks.
* Simian Farmer
Point & Counterpoint
Slack Back Mack
Dust Bunny Club
Dribble by Chuck Ferris
*
In the Shadow of the Iris

This week, we've got a few folks you've seen before as Editor's Picks, as well as some new faces. Paul opted to use a theme this week (as is his prerogative as Guest Editor), which I would characterize as folks with a flair for language, or who know how to turn a phrase (each in their own way.)

Now, I know some folks are still skeptical about the whole Guest Editor's picks programming feature, which is one of the reasons I picked Paul, who has also expressed his own concerns about Guest Editor (both on the boards and to me directly).

Anyway, please look for more on this and other stuff (including a request for Buddy Icon ideas) shortly in my
Magic Smoke blog.

Lastly for right now, best wishes from all of us over here to
Pamela.

Thanks,
Joe

Here are the First Guest Editor's Picks for June 17, 2005:

See Dan's Top 6 & More

Here are the Editor's Picks for June 10, 2005:
*
Adventures of the Two-Faced Baseball
*
Abrasivist
* Strange Stories
* Dating Tips for Psychopaths
* A Dog's Life

This week's theme is, well, (how can I put this) blogs that are Different.  Some might say "weird", others "niche" and still others simply "special."

Our lineup leads off with the photoblog of an anthropomorphized baseball, a couple of humorists, some strange stories and a blogging dog.

Here are the Editor's Picks for June 3, 2005:
*
SeƱorita
* One Year in Japan
* Ship's Log
* CheetahhhhhhhBlog
* Dave and Mary's Travel Adventure

This week's theme is
Travel (loosely). We're looking at a few different aspects of travel, including an extended European jaunt; teaching English in Japan; a couple section-hiking the Appalachian Trail (updating via IM every few days); a professor working in Korea (& dreaming of Oman) and some US RVers.

May 2005

Here are the Editor's Picks for May 27, 2005:
*
A Look at a Soldier's Life
* Gone for a Soldier
* Veterans Voices
* Lance Corporal Schick's Daily Update
* Everything Laura

Because we're coming up on Memorial Day, this week's theme is Military Journals, looking at several aspects of those who serve in the military.

This week's bunch includes a look back on past deployments abroad; a soldier currently stationed in Iraq; a spotlight on veteran's issues; the recovery of a wounded combat vet; and a military wife with a husband abroad.

Here are the Editor's Picks for May 20, 2005:

Hi all...here's an update to the list: a featured Journaler asked to be removed from consideration, so I've updated the Editor's Picks with a new addition:

* That's What I'm Thinking

Here are the Editor's Picks for May 20, 2005:
* Detached and Indifferent Expressions
* La Dolce Vita
* The Kosovo Kronichles REMOVED
* This Is Me
* Batter-Up With Bruno

No particular theme this week, which must mean that it's Rambling time again.

There are many different ways to ramble. Some styles are very stream of consciousness; others are out to tell a specific story or a series of events. This week's group also includes a bunch of different happenings, including car accidents, sick pets, a train wreck, final exams and Albanians.

Here are the
Editor's Picks for May 13, 2005:

*
Brianna's Blog
* Blogger
* Chilly's Thoughts
*
Class of 2005: A Personal Journey
*
Therapist or Patient?

Since we're in the middle of commencement season, I thought now would be a good time to feature some Graduation and School Journals.

This week's group includes folks in a bunch of different educational states, including soon-to-be-grad, transferring student, summer breaker and incoming freshman.

Here are the Editor's Picks for May 6, 2005:

*
Livin' la Vida Mommy
*
My Fairytale
* Mandy's Treasure Chest
*
And Then There Were Four
*
A Mum's Tale

Well, Mother's Day is Sunday, so I figured that this would be a good time to highlight some Mom Journals.  We've got stay-at-home-moms, military moms, new moms, moms-to-be and even a mom from across the pond.

Truth be told, there are a lot of great Mom Journals and Journalers out there -- I could probably feature Mom blogs every week of the year, so please don't feel slighted if yours isn't one of this week's picks.

As always, feel free to send me your Journals, and we'll take a look at them for consideration as future Editor's Picks.  This month's topic lineup isn't quite set yet, but if you have any Journals that talk about vacations (or travel) or graduation (or school in general), drop me a line at this screen name and I'll pay extra attention.

Thanks, Happy Mother's Day and Happy Journaling!

April 2005

Here are the Editor's Picks for April 29, 2005:

*
Just Another Hooker
* Knit-a-Polooza
*
Crochet With Dee
*
Deanna's Stitching and Stuff
*
Another Day, Another Quilt Block

This week, we're taking a look at a group of handy people who use Journals to talk about their hobbies. And they do more than just talk -- they share resources, show off current projects, share tips and more (as well as talk about other things going on in their lives). Oh, and the theme is Crafts (primarily the fiber arts, so crochet, quilting, knitting, sewing, etc).

Here are the Editor's Picks for April 22, 2005:

*
Simple Yet Satisfying
* Realizm
* Life as I Live It
* Journey to Peace
* A Second Chance

To paraphrase Rod Serling, this week's theme takes us to another dimension of Journals -- one not only of sight and mind, but of sound. No, it's not the Twilight Zone. This week, we're looking at -- and hearing -- Audio Journals.

Whether you're using audio Journal entries to share a poetry read, sing a song, tell a story or just say hello, the addition of audio can further flavor, depth and personality to your blog.

As a reminder, if you've got an audio Journal (or any other kind of Journal) and would like to be considered for inclusion in a future Editor's Pick, just drop me a line at this screen name.

Here are the
Editor's Picks for April 15, 2005:

*
Footprints in the Sand
* StuccoHouse Blog
Bogturtle's Garden
*
Mitzi's Musings
*
Garden Time

I think people are anxious enough today, it being tax deadline day and all, so I figured we'd go look at matters of a different sort of green and look at some spring things: Gardening Journals.

Because of the chronological nature of Journals and blogs, they're great for things that grow, like kids and gardens.  Plus, you get to show your pictures, get helpful feedback and more.

In this week's selection, we've got people who are planning their garden for the season, to folks who are out there in the dirt planting.  Plus, in addition to their gardens, they also talk about lots of other things. And that's okay, too.

Here are the Editor's Picks for April 8, 2005:

*
On a Wing and a Prayer
* Yarns and Tall Tails
*
Inside Jenna's Head
*
Midlife Musings
*
The StupidSheet Guy

Okay, this week, we're back on track, with a mix of Journals covering a variety of things. There isn't really an overarching theme: it's just People Talking About Their Lives and Stuff. Which, admittedly, doesn't roll off the tongue.

We've got folks talking about their family lives; a college student; a self-described cynic (and dad); and a perspective from midlife.

I'm of the belief that everyone has something interesting to say.  Remember, no matter how boring you think your life is, there's bound to be someone out there who finds it fascinating...

Thanks, and Happy Journaling!

Here are the Editor's Picks for April 1, 2005:

*
Sorting the Pieces
*
Both Sides of the Coin
*
N.A. Moments
*
Gabreael's Body, Mind, & Spirit Journal
*
Better Than Kicking the Dog

This week, I had originally planned on doing a mix of Journals covering a variety of things, but because of the news about the Pope's deteriorating condition, I thought this might be a good time to feature Journals that deal with different aspects of Spirituality.

Like I say in the blurb, issues of religion, faith and spirituality are intensely private matters, yet ones that lend themselves easily to sharing, which is a perfect use of blogs.

Thanks, and Happy Journaling!

March 2005

Hi everybody...

Here are the
Editor's Picks for March 25, 2005 (doing something a little different this week, which I will get into below):

*
Patrick's Place
*
The Faces of AOL J-Land
*
The Journal Jar
*
A Journal Land Novel
*
The J-Land Times

This week, we're doing a little navel-gazing -- our theme is J-Landers (talking with, about and to other J-Landers).  Call it a "Do It Yourself" theme -- our Journals are all about J-Landers doing stuff for the community as a whole, ranging from creating your own discussion topics, writing about news and events, doing up directories & even doing a collaborative novel.

There are a lot of great topics, polls, directories and more that you guys are creating for yourselves, and we at AOL are suitably impressed, so please everybody (not just our featured picks) give yourselves a big pat on the back for a job well done.  Keep up the good work!

Here are the Editor's Picks for March 18, 2005:

*
Uncommon Sense
*
De Profundis
* The New World
* Truth from a Lefty Christian
* The Dude Page

(I have dispensed with the numbering of the Editor's Picks in this post because I don't want people to get the impression that it's some sort of ranking -- it's just a list.)

This week's theme centers around Political Journals. They're Journals that focus primarily (but not entirely) on political discourse, debate and discussion.  We tried to get a selection across the political spectrum (at least, the American political spectrum).

Since politics is always a touchy subject, please be kind out there to each other (at the risk of sounding Jerry Springer-esque.)

Also, all you ramblers and Journalers who don' t have a specific topic (other than "Life"), have no fear; we will continue to feature a mix of "general"Journals along with the topical Journals.

Here are the Editor's Picks for March 11, 2005:

1.
Gino's Thoughts...
