A SHORT HISTORY OF COMMUNISM IN CHINA: FROM MAO'S LONG MARCH UNTIL THE OLYMPICS

BY ROBERT L. HUFFSTUTTER

THERE IS MUCH TO BE SAID ABOUT TODAY'S CHINA, but one cannot make any statements about China today without a long and serious look at China's past. Beginning with the Allied Victory of World War Two, most American officials of that era hoped that China would get on the Democracy train being engineered by Chang Kai Chek, Allied leaders, and those in charge of the world financial system. Mao, not a cruel man by nature, but a poet at heart, was intense; he had a plan for his nation that he assumed would work. He knew it could not be done overnight. Had America respected the political sovreignty of this nation, it is quite possible that Korea and Vietnam would have never happened. There was, however, the Russian factor, led by nasty Uncle Joe who was not a poet by any means and frequently had his mind clouded by too much vodka. Stalin was paranoid in the worst way. He soothed his paranoia by murdering millions of anti-Joe folks. He sent many to Joe's Cold Storage Factories in the Gulag. Joe was no friend of Mao's. Had Uncle Joe lived beyond 1953 and became even more paranoid, it is likely that he and Mao would have had a knock-down drag out. Contrary to popular belief, Russian Communisim was totally different than Chinese Communism. While Chinese Communisim had the benefit of the masses as its long-term goal, Russian Communism was perverted and mixed with many pyschopathic and selfish ideas and goals. What's more, Stalin was deathly fearful of Germans, with due cause. He wanted to make sure there would be no more Stalingrads. Can you blame him? He did go overboard. But this is becoming to large of a nutshell. Take a look at the progress of Russia today compared with the progress of China today. Therein is the shining difference between two types of communism. China is truly reaping benefits from the sweat and toil of those who led the long march into the new century. Look at the skyscrapers in Shanghai and other cities. There was a time when the entire world was impressed with the skyscrapers in New York and Chicago; there was a time when our railroads were admired by the world. Look at the Chinese railways today if you want to see what intelligent planning of a transportation system is all about. I still believe American Democracy is the best form of government, however, we have been too quick to judge the minds of those who ledChina to where China is today. It is possible that, like Russia, America has been a bit too paranoid.

PHOTO REVIEW BY ROBERT L. HUFFSTUTTER

THE PERFECT PICTURE OF CHINA

.....A MOST IDYLIC SCENE FROM AN OLD TEXT BOOK? NO. CHECK OUT THE FACTORY IN THE BACKGROUND. HOWEVER, IT IS COMFORTING TO KNOW THAT DESPITE CHINA'S GIANT STEP INTO THE 21ST CENTURY, THERE IS SOME OF THE PAST THAT REMAINS.......A BEAUTIFUL SCENE. CONGRATULATIONS TO ANDREASTHEKAT FOR A CLASSIC PHOTO THAT WILL BE APPRECIATED BY ALL ARM CHAIR TRAVELERS AND BY THOSE WHO HAVE TRAVELED THE ORIENT

THE COLORS IN THIS PHOTO ARE ONE OF THE REASONS IT IS BEAUTIFUL AND UNIQUE. THE COLORS ARE, I BELIEVE MOST WILL AGREE, EXTREMELY RARE. THE BOATS HAVE A WAY OF ADDING LIFE; THEIR TEXTURE AND STYLE ADDS CONTRAST TO THE MIRRORED REFLECTIONS TO CREATE INTEREST. LIKEWISE, HOW FREQUENTLY DOES ONE FIND SUCH A TIMELY BACKGROUND?

A FINAL COMMENT: IT IS A PERFECT PHOTOGRAPH BY ALL STANDARDS.
