THOSE WERE THE DAYS...THE 1950S WHEN STAMPS WERE ABOUT THREE CENTS AND I WAS ONLY EIGHT YEARS OLD
My stamp collecting interests were the result of my interest in history. One of the neighbors, an elderly gentleman who was a retired editor of a newspaper, had a basement full of old National Geographics and all types of reading materials. To make a long story short, he was an invalid and restricted to bed. His wife was a gardener and always outside in the summer time. I would venture across the street and talk with the lady every once in awhile. She was a sweet lady, always wearing a bonnet. She asked if I would like to talk to her husband about history. I said yes. Well, from that day on, until he died, we spent an hour or so every day or so talking about history. He was a wise man. He would find an interest he knew I was interested in, mention it in some manner and then wait for my questions. I was curious. He had the answers and enjoyed sharing his knowledge. Thus, I received some first-person lessons on the Spanish American War and stories about his uncles and relatives who had been in the Civil War. The memory of that man reclining in his study in bed with a blanket up to his chin is still clear. When he died, he left me the beginning of an interesting United States stamp collection. Had I continued collecting, my collection would be worth a few thousand dollars, but I found more pressing interests as I entered my twenties and the collection is long gone. It served a good purpose when I was interested in keeping it up to date and maintaining it as a proud collector. Sometimes, boys grow up before they are really ready to grow up.

HOW STAMP COLLECTING WILL HELP ONE LEARN ABOUT HISTORY
Inverted Jenny's are Hot

Inverted Jenny Single. ©2007 Whitman Publishing, LLC. All rights reserved.
In case you've been too busy Holiday shopping to pay attention to the latest stamp news, the 1918 Inverted Jenny has been the talk of the town. With only a few appearances in recent news: once in 2005, when financier Bill Gross made his famous trade with Donald Sundman, president of Mystic Stamp Company, a $2,970,000 Inverted Jenny block of four for one of only two known examples of the U.S. 1¢ Z Grill stamp. And again in 2006, when it was reported that a Florida election official found an absentee ballot with an Inverted Jenny, only later to find it a counterfeit. The Inverted Jenny is making a comeback. On November 14, 2007 a well centered invert was sold by Robert A. Siegel Auction Galleries for the whopping sum of $977,500, much higher than it's $375,000 retail value. A month later, another single would sell by Heritage Auction Galleries for $825,000 to a New York Wall Street executive who had lost the previous November auction. With record breaking prices like these, interest everywhere has peaked in the philatelic hobby. To add to the frenzy,
Stampwants.com decided to give away, yes GIVE away, a single inverted Jenny in an online contest that lasted 11 days. The winner of the contest will be announced live on January 12, 2008 at 2:00 P.M. at the APS Ameristamp Expo in Charlotte, North Carolina.
