I'M A NICE GUY WHO APPRECIATES LIFE, BEAUTY AND THE JOYS OF PEACE OF MIND.  PEACE ON EARTH IS MY HOPE FOR THIS WORLD.

My name is Robert L. Huffstutter. Art and literature have been my primary interests throughout my lifetime. Like many young Americans who became adults in the 1960s, my goals included fame and fortune through the arts. In addition to becoming an artist and a writer, I wanted to enjoy and experience a successful career in the United States Navy. Unfortunately, there is a discipline about a naval career and military lifestyle that is often in direct conflict with the goals and aspirations of becoming an officer and a gentleman.

My decision to return to civilian life after three separate and exciting  tours of duty was difficult. There were some very personal heartaches involved and it was the type of decision that haunts and torments; there are times when I feel I should have continued my Naval career and there is this actual reality I accept that I made the right decision to become a free and independent American.

My intense ambition to become the great American novelist and poet was overwhelming; I also wanted to become the artist who would record my generation through paintings and sketches.

I returned to civilian life and for the next few years enjoyed a very carefree lifestyle on the West Coast. Although it would have been easy  to drift from San Francisco to Languna Beach for the rest of my days, I finally established several independent businesses in order to afford the joys necessary to support a wife and family and maintain a happy lifestyle. My grandchildren are my rewards for making a domestic decision and I feel truly blessed by the woman who became my wife and stood by me through the good times and the bad times. And there were, as most any artist's spouse will acclaim, "some pretty intense and perilous periods of time." No longer disturbed by "The Fires of Spring" I reflect on several of Robert Frost's poems.  There is one poem by Robert Frost about two roads diverging...and I "took the one less traveled by." One should never surrender one's dreams and ambitions. Though the body becomes less able to climb those unexplored areas of the BaJa, the mind becomes more alert and in tune with the splendors of Hilton's Shangra La.

The answers to these questions are open for discussion; they can be answered by each and everyone who has ever had the beat inclination.

Beatdom is not something that everyone understands. Unless one has spent time in Greenwich Village or Venice West during the late 50s through the mid 60s, the time of apprenticeship has expired. That is not to say that one cannot appreciate the romance of beatdom; there has been a revival of intense interest in the beat culture during the past few years. I am glad to have been one of the Gas House's first bathtub sitters. I am thrilled to have had my poetry read at the Venice West Cafe in 1960; I am glad to have been at the right spot at the right time for a short part of my life that was long enough to make me a charter member of the beat generation.My blog or photojournal, BEATNIK MEMORIES, is a casual and informal collection of  reflections of the positive mental energy that created the beat generation in the early 60s and anything akin to that power source thereafter. Hopefully, this blog will be full of the kind of cool stuff you will dig. If you are a beat or were a beat, if you have stuff about beats that you would like to share, send it to me at huffstutter@aol.com for consideration. Your work and efforts will be appreciated through publication unless it is totally unsuitable. Do not resubmit Howl or anything similar at this particular point in time. Thanks for tolerating my dimwitted humor; time has taken its toll. Do you hear for whom the bells toll? Those fires of spring might have been too hot. Thanks, Rob.

I AM SO GLAD TO BE HERE ON THE COAST TO ENJOY THE VARIETY OF LIFESTYLES THAT MAKE THE CALIFORNIA LIFESTYLE SO UNIQUE. THIS IS A MOST INTERESTING ERA IN WHICH TO BE ALIVE AND WELL, OBSERVING AMERICA AT ITS APEX. IF I HAD THE CHANCE TO DO IT ALL OVER AGAIN, I WOULD OPT TO BECOME AN ADMIRAL AND ENJOY A CAREER FAR AWAY FROM THE SUPERFICIALITIES OF THE WAY MATERIAL HANGS ABOUT THE VARIOUS AREAS OF THE HUMAN ANATOMY, PREFERRING TO BE ON THE ALERT, ARMED WITH LETHAL WEAPONS, TO DISCOURAGE THE RADICALS OF THIS WORLD FROM INVADING THE WESTERN HEMISPHERE AND ATTEMPTING TO IMPOSE THEIR VALUES ON A PEOPLE (AMERICANS) WHO ARE MINDING THEIR OWN DAMNED BUSINESS AND ENJOYING THE TEMPORAL BLESSINGS OF THE MATERIAL ITEMS CREATED FROM THE NATURAL RESOURCES OF A CREATOR WHO SURELY MUST HAVE HAD A REASON FOR CREATING SUCH RESOURCES INITIALLY. HAVING A REASONABLE MIND AND COMMON SENSE, IT BECAME APPARENT TO ME AT AN EARLY AGE THAT MINDING ONE'S OWN BUSINESS WAS THE SMARTEST HABIT ONE COULD CULTIVATE IN ORDER TO LIVE IN RELATIVE PEACE AND HARMONY WITH THOSE IN MY IMMEDIATE AREA. FURTHERMORE, AS A FIRM BELIEVER THAT EVERY INDIVIDUAL BORN INTO THIS WORLD HAS THE RIGHT TO THINK AND ACT ACCORDING TO THEIR OWN BELIEFS WITHOUT FEAR OF BEING EXECUTED OR JAILED HAS MADE ME MORE APPRECIATIVE OF MY CITIZENSHIP AS AN AMERICAN CITIZEN. REALIZING THAT AMERICA IS BY NO MEANS PERFECT, I AM BRIGHT ENOUGH TO REALIZE THAT THERE IS NO OTHER COUNTRY ON THE FACE OF THE EARTH THAT WILL PERMIT SUCH FREEDOM. FURTHERMORE, REALIZING THAT THE CREATOR MUST SURELY PREFER THAT THE WORLD POPULATION DEMONSTRATE PEACE, LOVE AND CHARITY TOWARD ONE ANOTHER, I HAVE NEVER QUESTIONED AMERICA'S RIGHTFUL PLACE IN LINE FOR THE REWARDS DUE TO A PEOPLE AND A NATION WHO DO THEIR DAMNEST TO DO UNTO OTHERS WHAT THEY WOULD HAVE DONE UNTO THEM...IN OTHER WORDS, THE GOLDEN RULE. LOVE, NOT HATE, OVERCOMES EVIL. AND REST ASSURED, LOVE WILL ENJOY THE FINAL REWARDS.......AND THEN SHALL PEACE BE TO THOSE WHO KNOW HOW TO LOVE ONE ANOTHER IN TRUTH WITHOUT A JUDGING SWORD, BUT KIND LOVING WORDS
