Dear Friends

Today is the 13th day in a row without whaling in the Southern Ocean due to the presence of the Greenpeace Ship Esperanza. It looks like the whalers are still intent on hunting though, so we're calling on prominant figures in Japan to speak up.

One man with more influence than most is the CEO of Canon, the world's number one camera maker, and current head of the Japanese Business Federation. He'd also make a perfect whale defender, since Canon has built so much of its reputation on conservation of endangered species (you may have seen their ads in National Geographic--every month since 1981).

This is the statement we're asking Canon's CEO, Mr. Fujio Mitarai, to sign: "Canon is committed to building a better world for future generations, and does not support the hunting of endangered or threatened species with anything other than a camera. Canon believes the lethal whaling research programme in the Southern Ocean should be ended, and replaced with a non-lethal research programme."

Please write a letter to Canon urging them to join the cause

Whales need a powerful domestic ally in Japan. If Japan wants to do research, it can do so with cameras and other non-lethal means -- just as we're using photo identification to research whale migration patterns, along with skin biopsies, satellite tracking, and other harmless methods as part of our Great Whale Trail project.

Humpback whales reprieved, but whaling ship plans loom

Japan has announced today that it will not be killing humpack whales this season! Well done to all of you who pressured your governments to call - Japan heard us, and humpbacks will no longer be part of the hunt thanks to the public outrage we helped generate, particularly the diplomatic pressure that resulted from the US and Australia. Even so, saving one species for one season is not enough! The future of whaling may well rest on whether the Japanese government succeeds in secret plans to build a new whaling ship.

By stopping this ship, we could stop all whaling in the Southern Ocean forever!

No humpback whales will be hunted this season, the Japanese Government just announced this morning. 2008 will be the last year for inefficient lightbulbs in Ireland, lawmakers announced earlier this month. The European Commission has stalled a vote on GMOs until the new year because we've mustered a green/GE-free majority of European Commissioners. Greenpeace campaigning -- petitions, actions, research, fundraising, spreading the word -- works.

WILL SOMEONE PLEASE INFORM ME ABOUT THE KIND OF ACTIVITIES THAT ARE TAKING PLACE...?

This is one of the most interesting series of photos of whales that I have seen, but because I am not whale savvy, I do not know whether there is a strange creature in amonst the whales or if the whales are mating; I regret that there is no text accompanining the photos. They are remarkable. If anyone knows what type of activities these whales are enjoying, please post it in the comments block below.

Pacemed2's photographs are unbelievablely close, clear and taken with the obvious knowledge required to access whale behavior in such close proximity; but those of us who are laymen when it comes to whales need more information. If Pacemed can shoot photos like these, Pacemed should present us with some text. We are waiting. What an opportunity, following a pod of whales like these, watching them doing whatever they are doing, watching the gulls following their every antic. The thought of one solitary soul in such a majestic form in awe-inspiring. A life is a life, but there is something different that clicks in my mind when I consider the life of a gull and the life of a whale. Is it significant that the dimensions of these whales in comparison to the gulls make them more important than the gulls? I guess I must be prejudiced; I find the whales more fascinating than the gulls. Otherwise, I would be writing about the number of gulls a few whales stirred up. Oh, my, my, would you look at what those two big fish did...they stirred up an unbelievable amount of seabirds! I love sea gulls, honestly, but I really love whales. Perhaps I would love gulls more if they were as rare as whales.

I thought this shot was a shot of killer whale, but I can clearly see it is the tail fin of a regular whale. Congratulations to Picture from pacemed2's for some fantastic shots...

What kind of whales are these and where are they? Imagine the thrill of seeing this display of nature's beauty. It makes me realize that no matter how important man and woman believe they are, we are not nearly as important as we might like to think. If there is another audience watching this display, I would imagine it is one that truly loves nature. This is one of life's blessings, a visual that is hard to describe.

Just as Cruel as Ever

“There is No Humane Way to Kill a Whale at Sea”

Killing Whales for Science ... or Lunch? Scientific whaling is commercial whaling in disguise. In fact, the IWC has clearly stated it does not need the information from Japan obtained by killing whales and officially asked them to stop. Despite repeated IWC objections, Japan has engaged in “scientific” whaling since 1987 by using loopholes in the treaty that governs the IWC. Japan claims that scientific whaling is necessary to determine if whales are hurting commercial fish stocks. Yet some of the whale species killed by Japan do not even eat fish! Under IWC rules, any meat that results from research whaling must be used, leaving Japan free to sell whale meat in markets and upscale Japanese restaurants. Over two thousand tons of whale meat came back from the Antarctic last year, and they ended up on restaurant tables and store shelves, not labs. Japan Buys Votes to Kill Whales Japan influences developing countries with fishery support to join the IWC and vote to overturn the global ban on whaling. Small island developing states and Lesser Developed Countries (LCDs) are Japan’s targets. Japan’s effort to undermine an international regulatory commission through the purchase of country votes has made it impossible for other countries to pass further conservation measures through the IWC, such as the creation of a whale sanctuary in the south Pacific. With the recruitment of just a few more countries, Japan could assemble the simple majority it needs to overturn the whaling ban. Whales are Worth Far More Alive Than Dead Whales and people both do better when these magnificent animals are viewed rather than hurt. When a whale is killed you make money for one day, but if you let it live you can make money from taking people out to watch it three times a day for 50 years. In nations where whales are protected rather than hunted, such as Australia, whale watching is a sustainable and fast-growing industry. Australia’s whale watching industry contributed more than $270 million to its economy in 2003. In comparison, Japan’s whale meat industry fetches approximately $4 million a year with heavy government subsidies to the whale fleet and is not sustainable. Yet, even if anti-whaling nations enforce the ban at the IWC, Japan will still be setting its harpoons for whales in Australian waters using the loophole. The fleet will keep on hunting in Antarctic waters claimed by Australia, where it has already taken hundreds of minke whales. Only a worldwide outrage can stop them before humpbacks are added to their list.
