Virtual Thrift Shopping with Bloggers

It's time to show my items from my Virtual Thrift Shopping event, hosted here by Cindy!  Now, mind you, the shopping part was NOT virtual.  This was real money I spent, and the items are NOT virtual, this is real stuff that now entered our home!  The virtual part is that we all "went shopping together"!  Oh, and I had mocha and pastries along the way... Please go to Cindy's blog for the whole list of who went for the fun and click on the various posts to see the great "finds"!

My primary goal was to either find things to alter.  My second goal was to find something "vintage" for the swap I'm in, Dolly's "My Vintage Heart Swap".  This part of my shopping goal was actually way more difficult than I imagined, but I did find something...you'll see...

Okay, time to show and tell!  Get fresh cup of coffee or tea, and let's have some fun!

My sister, Roberta, was on my mind (she ran a 26+ mile marathon at Disney World yesterday!), so I had to buy this book!  It was 25 cents, and will give me an endless supply of vintage pages that have "Roberta" on them!  Wouldn't you buy a vintage book with one of your sister's names on it?...

This Ikea shelf is brand new, I paid $3.99 for it and will give it to one of my daughters for a Valentine's Day gift!  (I put the heart and button on the tear on the wrapping that was already there.  I just glued a magnet on the back of a big button.)  The board is a magnetic chalkboard with two storage shelves.  The nearest Ikea store is 5 hours away, so this was a treat to find! ...

No, I didn't need more cookie cutters.  Yes, I love cookie cutters and couldn't pass the chance to own this cute Scottie Dog Cutter!  (I paid $1.99 for a bag of various cutters, this is the one I was after!)....

I forgot to take a "before" picture of this mirror.  The minute I came home from shopping I plopped it on my painting workbench and started painting it white.  It's a large mirror, the size I've been looking for for a long time!  I will put it in our bathroom above the sink to replace the current 1979 mirror/shelf that is there!  Remember, I (we) are constantly working on our house, I guess it's one of our hobbies.  Or, we just can't sit still.  Or we are never content.. Or whatever!  I paid $24 (my highest priced item, but I needed it, and hadn't found a mirror this size until now).  Here's the mirror with one coat of paint, it'll end of up with at least three coats and a sealant (it was just a wooden frame)....

Okay, this next purchase was my favorite!  I paid $3.50 for a paper shredder!  I've always wanted to shred music, and colored papers to make my own packaging!  A while back I had seen a fellow blogger showing shredded music and I loved it (I can't remember WHO that was, so if it was YOU, let me know and I'll give credit due!)....

So, of course, I had to buy some music to shred (not that I don't already own scads of vintage music...I do!)...

Now, I know I'm "showing" something for a swap before it's time...but let's just call it a sneak peek!  The next picture shows my "vintage" part of the "Vintage Heart Swap" I'm working on.  The copper mold is a cherry heart, how could I not use this for my vintage item?  It was 50 cents.  Then the vintage glitter was another 50 cents.  I'll combine all this and top it off with the Valentine ribbons, again 50 cents each....

Here's a picture of the concept I'll use with the music as package filler...this is not the finished project, but just to show you the idea...

This silver-plated tray was 50 cents.  The minute I saw it I thought of the project in the recent Somerset magazine where each writer was challenged to buy one item and then paint it.  I brought it home and "borrowed" some of Mark's automotive RED spray paint and love how it looks altered as a RED Valentine tray...you'll see...

I saw an small old beat-up pink bakery box and looked inside...There were a dozen maids in waiting looking up at me!  How could I pass these girls up?  I paid $2.50 for the box.  There were 2 or 3 groomsmen in the box, but I left those men out of the picture...after all, this virtual shopping trip was just for us girls. Oh, and I love the tray painted RED!  Valentine red!....

This was a no brainer for me...if I ever see vintage Scrabble games I buy them.  But my limit is $1.  Luckily, this was right at my limit, I paid $1.  I have plenty of letters (tiles) but I was running low on my "J's"...

I use the tiles, the box, and the board in various artsy-craftsy projects.  I wanted to show this next pictures, as it shows the back of some of my "Heart Felt" brooches.  I used the written portion of the game instructions as well as the sold color part of the game box for the backs...

Ann (Keeping Up with the Tatums) just started a "Scrabble Craft" Flickr group.  She invited me to join and then I about knocked her over as I loaded the group up with all my Scrabble pictures!  Be sure to take a look!

Are you still with me?  This is long, I know.  Come back tomorrow if you need to!  This next picture is just to show you another stop I made on my Thrift Store Trip.  I try to check in at the library at the "FREE BOOKS" section...I cut up books and use the papers for crafts, such as my Vintage Sewn Valentines or my other collages.  The best books are the Reader's Digest books...nice and thick, often very yellowed pages, and the covers are beautiful artwork in and of themselves.  The only thing around here is that because of our 12 months of rain (just kidding) second hand books are often "musty" smelling.  Can you picture me there in the library smelling the FREE BOOKS?  I do, and I must, to prevent that "musty" smell from coming in our home!  So, here's one of my free items of the day....

Is that bad? To cut these books up? I figure someone already loved them, and read them and now it's my turn to USE them!  Where do you get your FREE artsy-craftsy supplies?

Okay.  I'm finished.  I've shown you what I have, told you what I've paid and my coffee mug is empty.  The pastry is eaten and I've had a blast virtual shopping with you all!  Great weekend, let's do it again sometime, okay?

Blessings!

Heidi! So cool! I'm commenting on this post, but I just got back from out of town & have really enjoyed the last 20 minutes catching up on your posts. :) One idea - I had a swap partner send me a package packed with shredded pattern pieces in it.  I assume the patterns were incomplete, so that was a cool way to use the "leftovers." Thanks also for the clip art!

Wow! What a fun shopping trip you had! You did fantastic, too, hauling in some interesting and useful finds! You make the old, new again! You give life to the dreary. You are amazing! A Roberta book!!! A copper mold that looks like Mary Engelbreit! And a copper ME scottie cookie cutter! Marvelous finds, all of it. And you even got a gift purchased in there too, the cool board/shelf! I'd sure love to go with you someday, sometime, and have you point out what's great! Keep on having fun and entertaining us in Blogland - I appreciate you! Sallie

    Hi Heidi,
Love everything ~ thanks for sharing!  Went to Goodwill this evening & got a few things (just clothes ~ that's what they have the most of, but they're cute).
Hope the rest of your week is great.
    Love,
    Genece
