Lunar Eclipse (2003 Photo) and Tonight

A full lunar eclipse is on top for this evening for those of you who have clear skies.  I took a series of photos back in 2003 and put them together in one photo.  This photograph shows the moon going through the different stages from partial to full eclipse.

AOL also published a story about the eclipse which can be read here.

Capturing the eclipse tyipcally requires a tripod, strong zoom lens, and knowledge of aperture and shutter speeds - and patience.

The settings that worked best for me back in 2003 were:

Initial Phase (Half of Moon in shadows)
ISO 100, Aperture f/5.6.  Shutter speed: 0.003s

"Orange" Phase
ISO 100, f/5.6. I varied the shutter speed as needed (1.5 - 2.0 seconds as it got dark) and used a 500mm telephoto lens (35mm equivalent is 795mm).

Second in the series of Photographs of Antelope Canyon

Picture from Hometown

Here is another shot of Antelope Canyon.  This photograph gives you an idea of the height of the canyon walls and the beauty of such a magical place.  Antelope Canyon is just one of the many incredible places to see right here in the U.S.    It is located on an indian reservation in Page, Arizona.  The best time to visit - for photographic reasons - is during the summer at mid-day, when the rays of sun come beaming in through the small openings at the top of the canyon.

This image was shot last week, but in February the sun is too low in the sky to send their rays of light through the canyon.  To compensate for the lack of light I used a tripod and slightly longer exposure to help illuminate the scene with natural light.

Sedona, Arizona

Picture from Hometown

This was taken in Sedona last week.  I used a wide-angle 16mm lens (35mm equivalent) wihch helped to make this scenic view even more dramatic by adding a 3-dimensional feel.

Smooth Textured Canyon Walls

Picture from Hometown

The photograph above was captured during my trip last week to Arizona.  I actually started the trip in Utah and headed south to Bryce Canyon before crossing the border into Arizona and finally ending up in Sedona.  Over the next few weeks I'll post some of my faovrite images from this trip - staring with this shot from inside one of the "slot" canyons found in Arizona.

The walls of this canyon were about 100 feet in height and years of water rushing through this canyon has created this magnificent erosion of sand stone.  The top of the canyon is open allowing sunlight to light the inner walls of the canyon.  During the summer months, the midday sun will actually stream into the canyon, but in February the sun is too low in the horizon.

Floating Bubbles

The photograph above was shot at home with the help of the Interfit foldable shadow box that I picked up from Ritz Camera (See Below). I used two daylight flourescent bulbs inside inexpensive metal clamp lights that I picked up at Home Depot to illuminate the object.   The final image was then enhanced using Photoshop.

Thank you Greg for Spotlighting My Journal

I wanted to say thank you to Greg for spotlighting my journal.  While I haven't uploaded photos in a while due to time limitations I will try to do more postings. In the meantime I have added some photos here that would otherwise be hidden deep inside this journal.

Nature's Beauty

Picture from Hometown

My daughter called me the other afternoon to tell me to look outside, there was a beautiful rainbow in the sky.  We both share a love for nature's beauty - something I think she learned from all the years of me pointing out such beauty whenver I saw it - a beautiful sunset, dark storm clouds, rainbows, ice on limbs, etc.

I looked out the window and saw the rainbow so I grabbed my camera, put on my shoes, and ran outside.  Unfortunately the view between the trees of my yard was pretty unspectacular.  I grabbed my car keys, hopped in the car, and raced to the beach, which fortunately is about 1/5 mile from my house.

When I got to the beach, the large arch of the rainbow had disappeared, but the end of the rainbow was vivid against the dark storm clouds behind it.  I took a few photographs both in portrait and landscape views, trying to capture the foreground waves to give the photograph depth.  The result is this photograph. I hope you enjoy it.
