Lunar Eclipse (2003 Photo) and Tonight
A full lunar eclipse is on top for this evening for those of you who have clear skies. I took a series of photos back in 2003 and put them together in one photo. This photograph shows the moon going through the different stages from partial to full eclipse.
AOL also published a story about the eclipse which can be read here.
Capturing the eclipse tyipcally requires a tripod, strong zoom lens, and knowledge of aperture and shutter speeds - and patience.
The settings that worked best for me back in 2003 were:
Initial Phase (Half of Moon in shadows)
ISO 100, Aperture f/5.6. Shutter speed: 0.003s
"Orange" Phase
ISO 100, f/5.6. I varied the shutter speed as needed (1.5 - 2.0 seconds as it got dark) and used a 500mm telephoto lens (35mm equivalent is 795mm).
