Lawyers.... I have a number of acquaintances that are in the legal profession. Some of them would fall in the “friends” category but some of them would just acknowledge that they do know me. After I ran for State Representative against a lawyer several years ago I think I lost the possibility of friendship with many of them. I treated this as a negative point for being in politics. The State of Georgia has a large number of lawyers serving in the Legislature. I always suspected that many of the laws were written in a way that would encourage legal challenges and fees that would be paid to lawyers as a result. Until Representative John Meadows was elected from our district as a State Representative. I cannot remember that we ever elected a representative from Gordon County that was not a lawyer. They were also all Democrat lawyers. You might be interested in considering the national Presidential Candidates from each party to see their background. Democrat Senator Clinton is a lawyer married to a lawyer. Democrat Senator Obama is a lawyer married to a lawyer. Former Democrat Senator John Edwards who was running for President was also a lawyer married to a lawyer. Every Democratic candidate for President since 1984 attended law school. Al Gore attended law school but did not become a lawyer. Every Democratic candidate for Vice President except one since 1976 attended law school. Democratic Speaker of the House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi is a lawyer. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid is a lawyer. You should have no trouble seeing that the Democratic Party is a party of Lawyers. Lawyers deal in conflict. Their livelihood depends on conflict between opposing parties. It is no wonder that the current Congress has done so little during the past one and a half years since they became the majority party. Do you remember the first weeks after the Democrats took overCongress, they talked about how they were going to get things done. They pledged a 40 hour session of Congress. At present they start the session each week on Tuesday afternoon and close it on Thursday at noon. That is a 20 hour week and they do not accomplish very much even then. I listened to both Senator Clinton and Senator Obama speak at the Jefferson Jackson Dinner in Indiana just before the voting day. They both equate “Washington” with “George Bush”. They are very critical of Washington and how little is being accomplished. They tell us we must have change. Actually the President is the administrator of the policies and laws established by the Congress. The Democratic Congress has not given President Bush an iota of cooperation. I heard both Senators tell about the things that they were going to do in their administration. Except for the military where the President is the Commander in Chief and can order troop placement and activity, none of the claims they are making can be accomplished unless new laws are passed by the Congress. The President does not have the authority to do any of the changes that they are stating that they will do. The Republican Party is operated by successful businessmen who have proven their ability to administer an organization. President Bush and Vice President Cheney are both successful businessmen. Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich is a former college professor and historian. Former Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist was a heart surgeon. The last Republican President that was a lawyer was Gerald Ford and he left office 31 years ago. The Republicans are people who have accomplished something in their lives. Business is the function that has made our country successful and great. We only advance when we work and produce products. The Republicans have supported business and helped it to expand and create employment for the working class people. Lawyers treat the American citizens as clients and are trying to win more things for them from the big bad businesses that they say are taking advantage of them. Eliminate the businesses and you eliminate the jobs. In the last one and one half years of a Democrat Congress, we have seen gasoline go from $2.19 per gallon to $3.60 per gallon and the Democrats still will not permit our oil industry to drill new oil wells to supply the oil we need. They will not permit new safe clean nuclear power plants to be built. We have seen unemployment climb by 10%. We have 1% of the homes in America in foreclosure based on Congresses laws and regulations. President Bush has had his hands tied when he proposed any solution to any of these problems. To solve these problems take action by the Congress. Both Democratic candidates want to repeal President Bush’s tax cuts. They say they were just to benefit the rich. When President Clinton left office, a single person making a net income of $30,000 per year paid $8,400 per year in taxes. Under the current rates of the Bush tax cuts that same person is paying $4,500. A person making a net income of $75,000 per year under President Clinton paid $23,250.00 in income taxes. Currently that same person pays $18,750.00. per year. Repealing the tax cuts and raising the taxes will affect every one of us. It will also slow down the economy and it may actually reduce the total amount of taxes that the government collects.By the way, both Senators talk about the changes that they are going to make to improve the country. Both of them have been in the Senate for several years. Neither of them have offered a single legislative bill to solve any of the nations problems they are now talking about. If either of them becomes President I guess the biggest change will have to come in the one of them that wins the nomination. They have to convince their Senate friends to introduce and support their new laws that they would not introduce when they were Senators.
