You Can't Beat Mama

Today's Subliminal Thought Is:

Is my child really gifted?  My oldest son is possibly one of the smartest people to walk the face of this earth.  (Seriously.)  I've seen his test scores and he's been in the gifted and talented programs in two different states. There is no doubt in my mind that he's got the brains to go with his incredible good looks. (Aquired from his father, of course.)

But what is it about intelligent people that makes them absent-minded, yet conniving?

Yesterday, while standing not two feet from the front door, he announces he's going to my truck to get something out of the back.  I tell him, "Honey, make sure you unlock it first.  It's armed."  He answers, "Ok Mom."  Two seconds later, I hear the alarm blaring.

I scramble to find my car keys since it's apparent he didn't have them. I disable the alarm and wait by the door for him to come back in.  When he does, I bless him out for not paying attention and then ask him (foolishly) what he was thinking.  His response? Nothing. He told me he honestly wasn't thinking of anything when he tried to open the door.

Wanting to soften the blow of my disapproval for such silliness, I ask him if it scared him silly.   Instead of laughing, he cried, telling me that I am mean for getting on to him for making a mistake. It's important to note that this 11 year old has made this mistake 7 times in the last 10 days.  Of course, that made me feel like a heel.

So I sent him back out to the now unlocked truck to retrieve his backpack. Just as he reached to open the door I set off the panic button.

That'll teach him to guilt his mama.

I too have a gifted son and find myself battling with him for the reins sometimes. Glad I am not the only one. I would totally do the same thing!

Well, I actually laughed aloud at the end of this. I love demented parents. (I'm one, too)
My Mom gets me every year with some antic such as yours. Thanks goodness, I can pass this inherited trait on to my 3 children.
