Mrs. Linklater's Guide to the Universe

Does anyone find it ironic that there has been such a concerted effort to make burning the flag a punishable offense? When burning the flag is considered the only proper and correct way to dispose of it.

  From a legal standpoint, I think someone should have the right to burn flags.
  
  From a personal standpoint, I wish that they would live in 10 third world countries before deciding our country sucks.

  it is all just a tempest in a teapot, a hot button to push to get votes.
  I dont' see crowds of people trying to burn a flag, do you? And arent there more important issues?

  No irony at all.
  
  A flag retirement ceremony should be infused with respect for the Flag as a symbol representing our Union and our Freedoms.
  
  A flag burning is infused with the opposite.
  
  The promoters of the ban on desecration of the flag would do a service to those who are angry,  bored,  stoned or desiring face time on the tee vee without being clever enough to come up with moving words for the actual speech part of free speech, flag burners. The promoters of the ban would require a sacrifice (the risk of fine or jail time) of those that wish to use a cherished National Symbol as a sideshow prop. The promoters of the ban would re-infuse meaning into burning a flag as speech.
  
  The irony is the desire to make a point by destroying a symbol of our Nation and our Freedoms and at the same time desiring that the burners not risk anything to do so. Why not just burn their favorite T-shirt? That would be no less meaningful than burning a flag while facing no potential consequences. <-- My opinion, of course.

  I agree .... it makes no sense. And like I was just saying at Wil's place, one of the best things about this country is the fact that doing something just plain stupid is not grounds for proscecution. Tina

  never thought about getting rid of flags proper like
  never had to do that
  never even had one
  until my Dad passed away
  he was a veteran
  so they gave me a flag
  I want to get a special case for it
  I guess if you burn an American flag
  in a way that's not respectable
  just not right
