Aligning Pictures
Pretty cirrus clouds from yesterday, which are a nice change from the clouds we've been getting.
But that's not why I'm posting the picture. I'm posting it because an AOL Journer wanted to know how to get the pictures to go to the side, just like I have right here. It's actually not too hard to do, but requires a little bit of flipping back and forth between the "view as text" and "view as html" functions. Here's how you do it.
1. Upload your picture to your Hometown space, or some other place you can access it by a URL.
2. When you create your entry, add the picture with the "Add Image" button -- not with the "Add Pictures from Hometown" link. Using the Add Image button will require you to enter the URL of the picture; if you've uploaded to your Hometown area, the URL should be http://hometown.aol.com/[screenname]/[name of picture.extension]. For example, for the picture above, the URL is http://hometown.aol.com/johnscalzi/clouds525.jpg.
3. Once you've added the picture, flip over from "view as text" to "view as html." When you do, you'll see the the html scripting that places the picture on the page. What you want to do is add some more information to that scripting. Specifically, you want to add this: align=right if you want to put the picture to the right; align=left if you'd like it to the left. You'll add this after the URL for your picture, after the closing quotation mark but before the close bracket. So, for the picture above, the coding went from this:
<IMG src="http://hometown.aol.com/johnmscalzi/clouds525.jpg">
to this:
<IMG src="http://hometown.aol.com/johnmscalzi/clouds525.jpg" align=right>
Important Note: when you do this, for some inexplicable reason, the AOL Journals tool will create a link of the URL and make the quotation marks around disappear. Type them back in, or the coding won't work.
4. Once you've done this, just flip back over to "view as text." Your picture should now be located to the right or left depending on your preference, and you can type away.
That's how it's done!
