Let's Get Started

If all goes to plan, this post will go live at 12:00am Thursday morning -- the first minute of the first day AOL Journals is officially open. Yes, I am a geek.

Who am I? I'm John Scalzi. My job here is to "blog": That is, to search through the online world and present you interesting and noteworthy bits of news, information and commentary to read, think about and maybe even write about as well. I'm going to be making links to all sorts of sites: news sites, personal sites, other blogs and journals -- including AOL Journals, as they spring up and come online. Hopefully something I write about will encourage you to write in your own AOL Journal, or to create your own Journal to take part in the conversation. If so, welcome. The more, the merrier. Come on in, the water's fine. And so on.

My job is also to keep AOL Journalers connected with what's going on with AOL Journals, both on the technical side (the AOL Journals tool you use to post entries) and in the emerging community surrounding AOL Journals. And let's not forget the larger blogging and journaling community that already exists out there ("The Blogosphere," as it is generally known). We're now a part of that, too. So when you have questions, comments and observations about any of it, just let me know.

The one thing to always remember is this: Your AOL Journal is what you want it to be. Create a Journal to air your thoughts on politics. Make one to share the days before your wedding. Build one to get and give gardening tips. Start one to stay in touch with faraway friends (no stamps required). Create one about your cat (hey, people do). It's up to you. All you need to do is simply: Get started.

On that front, and to get everyone going, I've banged out a few "intro" posts for new AOL Journal members. Look to your right at the "Favorite Sites" sidebar, and you'll see them. Take a look, and let me know what you think. Those articles are starting points -- I know you'll have more questions and need clarifications from here. Let me know what you need. That's my job.

I'm looking forward to this. I hope you are, too. Let's see where this takes us.
