Hearing Spongebob Squarepants -- What zaniness!

Afternoon Conversation Starters

Hmmmm, let's see what's going on in the universe.

1. Gas prices go right through the roof -- and ain't it the truth, since this morning I filled up the tank with regular without paying attention to the price and then looked up and momentarily thought I'd hit the "premium" button instead (I like my car, but it doesn't deserve premium). It's up everywhere. So much for the "we invaded Iraq for the cheap gas" theory.

2. WTC remains to be interred on site -- at least until investigators can identify to whom they belong. My understanding is they will be part of a memorial. I don't know how I feel about this. On one hand there is no more appropriate place for these remains, and better they are somewhere where the public can feel a connection with them than in, say, some lab somewhere. But on the other hand it's going to be very emotionally tough for people visiting the memorial knowing people are actually interred there.

I think it's especially trenchant that the remains that will be there are unidentified. It's a reminder that those who struck the Towers didn't care who their victims were. The remains could be anybody, or any one of us -- and that's a point we'd all be do well to remember.

3. BBC to put everything online -- and by everything, I mean everything: Every radio and TV show the network has ever done. For free, even, to everyone who wants to access it. Goodness gracious, all that intellectual property out there where anyone can use it. Clearly the BBC didn't get the memo from the RIAA and the MPAA. Personally I'm looking forward to Monty Python and The Young Ones on an endless loop. Don't tell my wife.
