Hearing Poison -- Monica Schroeder
Strange Alternate Universe
So, what alternate universe did I slip into last night when I was asleep that Johnny Cash is a front-runner in the MTV Video Awards? Don't get me wrong: I like this universe. It makes much more sense than the one I just left. Even so, how very weird.
On the other hand, if you've actually seen the video (you'll want broadband for that link). There's no denying it's tremendously evocative, and sad for a number of different reasons, not the least of which is the irony of Johnny Cash's wife June staring at her husband with an expression of unmasked concern (Cash suffers from autonomic neuropathy) and it being she that passed before her husband. The song, incidentally, is a cover of "Hurt" by Nine Inch Nails. As I said, strange universe this is.
Aside from this, I'm fairly in the dark with the nominees for this year's awards, on account that inasmuch as it's been the better part of a decade since I've actually seen a video on MTV as I'm flipping by on the cable, I don't feel obligated to care that much. Still, I like me a good video; I was there when MTV started up, after all (back then, all MTV had was Duran Duran and 43 Rod Stewart videos! And we liked it!). But if someone can suggest to me which of the nominees is worth watching, I'll be happy to check it out.
Oh, wait, I do know one other video: "Bring Me to Life" by Evanescence. Amy Lee. Now there are some pipes.

I don't find his nomination either weird or disconcerting. The video is so powerful that after seeing it twice, I can't watch it again.
The roots of American music, poetry, and literature are heavy and vibrant in that man.
