Reading List

So, what are you reading? Call it my inquisitive nature, but I'm interested. In order to get you all in a sharing mood, here's what I've got on my bedside table. The science-fictiony flavor of these books is directly attributable to the fact that starting tomorrow I'm spending five days at TorCon, a huge science fiction convention. Yes, I'm a geek. You can say it to my face. Anyway, here's what I'm reading:

Idlewild by Nick Sagan: A moody teen wakes up in a nightmarish world with no memory but a vague feeling he's recently killed somebody. Things get weirder from there. Sagan cut his teeth writing on various Star Trek series, but this is in an entire new universe that one part teen angst, one part jmurder mysetery and one part end of the world -- shaken, not stirred.

Ilium by Dan Simmons: Simmons is currently my favorite author and Illium is fine example why: First he dazzles you with an encyclopedic knowledge of the Illiad, then he blows it up with a massive time-and-space-and-species-spanning clash of gods and humans. Tons of fun, and I do mean tons (it's a big book).

The Scar by China Mieville: Mieville has quickly developed a reputation as one of the best stylists among the new generation of SF writers, and The Scar adds to that reputation, as Mieville imagines a world that is both baroque and grotesque (in all senses of the word) -- its city of ships is like a suburb laid out by HP Lovecraft.

That's what I'm reading. What have you been paging through? Write it up on your journal or blog and send me the link: JMSjournal for AOL members, JMSjournal2@aol.com for everyone else.

Funny, I'm plowing through (for the second time) Simmons' Hyperion/Endymion series at this very moment. He's very quickly become one of my favorite authors; he's got a few duds (Children of the Night and Carrion Comfort were both 'eh', as was A Winter Haunting), but when he's on (Hollow Man, Summer of Night, Crook Factory), hoo-boy is he ON. I even bought a book of his short stories, and I -never- read short stories. (I read too fast, you see.)
