Cutting and Pasting

Okay, I've been getting a lot of mail from you AOLers, saying "How come we can't cut and paste into AOL Journals?" And I have to admit at first I was deeply confused, because I've been cutting and pasting since day one. But I've gotten enough letters that I knew I was missing something, so I went back and fiddled the tool, and now I get what you're talking about.

Indeed the "Cut" and "Paste" functions are not available through the AOL toolbar for what I am sure are very interesting technical reasons. BUT you can cut and paste using the traditional keyboard shortcuts. This is the reason I was confused -- I always use the keyboard shortcuts rather than the AOL toolbar. This is one of those small disconnects between me (and I imagine other people who work on computer all day long), and folks who are more casual computer users. So my apologies for not figuring this out sooner.

Anyway, here are the keyboard commands:

Cut: "Ctrl"+"X"

Paste: "Ctrl" + "V"

Also, Copy: "Ctrl" + "C"

So, all you do is highlight the text you want to use with your mouse, then use these keyboard commands (press both buttons at the same time), and you're good to go. I'll let the folks on the technical side know to put these notes in the official "how to do stuff" documents so we don't have any more confusion on this.

Weirdly, you can use the "Select All" command from the AOL toolbar and it will highlight all the text in the text entry window -- but if you use the keyword command for that ("Ctrl" + "A"), it highlights everything on the 'Add an Entry" page BUT the text in the text entry window! Interesting.

Thanks to everyone who sent in mail for bringing this to my attention -- and keep sending in your questions and comments so we can keep trying to make AOL Journals easier for you to use.

Since I don’t have a journal I can’t speak to that side of this situation but I have had no problem with the ‘right click’ maneuver of ‘Copy/Paste’ from any on-line window/screen into Word.  However, I also have had no problem with the ‘right click’ maneuver of ‘Copy/Paste’ from Word into; out going E-mail(AOL or Yahoo), journal comments or any “contact us” situations.

One trick that I have been doing since I started and have not seen anywhere is using 'write mail' for entries.  It has spell check for those of us who can't spell.  I type my entry in write mail from the tool bar, spell check and then cut and paste to my journal.  http://journals.aol.com/vortexgirl/MyFamilyMyLife

How do I add graphics/decorative art to my AOL journal? I can't figure out how to do so! Any instruction is appreciated! (p.s...I don't necessarily mean photos)

I don't know if you ever come back here and read your comments; but I'm (probably the latest) "new student in the class" (Valentire's Day 2005 --- and no, do not say "didn't you have anything better to do?").

Will you please TURN IT AROUND now, and leave out the keyboard commands?
I am not familiar with them, and would like to use this method. I will put a comment on your latest entry. There I will be more sure that it gets read.
    Thank you!
