Hearing Disney's "Hercules" and coughing -- daughter's up now.

The Emmys!

I'm sure someone won something at the Emmy Awards last night, but right off the top of my head I couldn't tell you who they were or for what they won (which is why I now present to you this handy-dandy news story on the matter). Call it a stupid, pointless bias, because really, that's what it is, but I honestly believe my marginal concern about the Oscars obviates my need to care about any of the rest of the awards the entertainment industry dishes out on a regular basis.

Among other things, the Oscars get in right in that there are a relatively small number of awards (24, give or take a couple). On the other hand, there are nearly 90 Emmys. I mean, I think it's lovely someone won an Emmy in the category of "Outstanding Makeup For A Miniseries, Movie Or A Special (Non-Prosthetic)," but ask me if I care. At least it's not the Grammys, which has so many categories that it's mildly surprising every single person in the United States hasn't gotten one. Or maybe you all have. You're just hiding them from me. Come on, what's that behind your back?

You know which awards I get excited about? The Pulitzers and the Nobels. But you won't see either of those televised. Pulitzers go to newspaper people and writers, who are (ahem) not exactly the beautiful people, and the Nobels typically go to scientists, who are also in desperate need of image consultants. Also, it's difficult to see a bunch of people at home getting excited about someone winning an award for "the development of nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy for determining the three-dimensional structure of biological macromolecules in solution" as opposed to, say, Everybody Loves Raymond.

But one can dream!

Update: Over at "Day in the Life of Shelli P" (which I've added to the "Other Journals" list), there's a tart observation about the Emmys' use of John Ritter's death. See, I knew I wasn't watching for a reason.

Heather Havrilesky rocks, so I don't doubt her Emmy recap rocks as well. Alas, I was unable to access Salon today because their obligatory ad would not let me through for some reason. I'll catch it tomorrow, possibly.

emmys. quite funny, i'm sure way more
