Hearing Love Bites -- Def Leppard

Another Round

This is going to open up yet another can of worms on this subject: Study: Sexual identity hard-wired by genetics. People on both sides of the social discussion of sexuality will probably find things to like and hate about a finding like this, which throws open the whole "choice vs. biology" argument as it relates to sexual identity.

Personally, while I find the argument interesting and useful in an intellectual sense, in a social sense I don't know that it matters why people have the sexuality they have. For whatever reasons, they are what they are. The US Constitution today is neutral on the questions of rights people have relative to whether those people's characteristics are innate (such as skin color) or chosen (such as one's religion); the one exception I can think of for this is the Presidential requirement that our nation's chief executive be native-born, but I think we can all agree that's an extraordinarily narrow case.

This being the case, from a social point of view, what does the "choice vs. biology" have to do with the discussion of sexual identity? I'm wondering what you folks think on the matter. Leave a comment or drop me a link. Keep it respectful and polite; it's a hot button issue, but I think we can all be grown-ups when discussing it.

personal sexual identity could be linked to sexual abuse as a child, which in many cases are link to mental illness or phiscal illness in their adult life. one sometimes never knows as a child who they can trust, this may go on and off thru out ones adult years . genetic birthes of the same blood line could be a linked to sexual identity weather by choice or genetics.who knows!!!

I am a gay male. I knew from a very early age (about at 3) that I was 'gay' but I had no idea what this whole thing was about. Believe, it is NOT by any choice. It is hard wired from birth. Just like hair color, skin color and the like, one does NOT make the choice to be gay or straight. So, I have to accept I am in the 5-10 percent of the population that is gay. So be it.

I am straight, my brother is gay and we've had many long discussions about his "situation". Because of this, I've been prompted to speak to other gays and lesbians. My conclusion is it's as much about how they're born as hair color. Hair color can be changed but only to the scalp level. Pretending to be straight is no different except that it hurts people.

I agree with the others also and feel it should be a personal choice. When a person has to accept the fact that they themselves are gay, they are not thrilled about it either! It is an overwhelming understanding of who they are and accepting their own sexual identity . A person doesn't choose to be gay because they want to, it is because this is who they are.
Why does it seem so hard for straights to accept this fact and so easily judge?
