LeBron Mania

LeBron James made his NBA debut last night and didn't disappoint. He had 25 points, which, if it's not a record for a rookie debut (someone more fanatical about basketball will have to fill in that blank), is still pretty darn good. His team, the Cleveland Cavaliers, still lost, to the Sacramento Kings. What are you going to do.

Cleveland loves him, of course, but even Sacramento found good things to say -- noting that his team still lost, of course. And the national press is all over the guy as well.

I can't even imagine what it's like to be this kid -- 18 years old and already worth $100 million in salary and endorsements, and carrying the hopes of an entire city (nay, the entire state of Ohio) on his back, not to mention the NBA as a whole. When I was 18, all anyone wanted of me is to show up for my class in Western Civilization, and even then no one really cared if I didn't (well, my mom did. You know moms). Honestly, just about the only other person I can think of who has anything close to this guy's frame of reference is Tiger Woods.

Here's hoping Tiger takes this guy aside and gives him some advice on how to handle it all. There's no doubt LeBron's got the goods, but he's still 18 years old. He's playing with the big boys now, but he's still a kid in a lot of respects. It's not his game I'd be worried about him dealing with. It's everything else in life. 18 is a young age to have everything in the world at your feet, and all that responsibility on your shoulders. I hope he has good help getting through all that.
