Reader Award Nominations

I've been telling you about the awards by AOL Journalers for the best AOL Journals out there for a while. Well, now the initial voting's been completed and the actual nominees in the ten categories have been announced. Voting for each of the categories begins tomorrow, November 1st and goes for a week, so you'll have a chance to look at each of the nominees and decide which one earns your vote.

Remember these awards are totally the creation of and by the initiative of enterprising AOL Journalers themselves -- it's not an official AOL thing. It's all about the Journalers themselves, and that's pretty cool.

And now a personal note: I notice I am nominated for one of the awards ("Best Variety of Subjects"). I'm deeply flattered by the nomination, so thanks to everyone who put in a nomination for me. But I sincerely hope you'll vote for one of the other two nominees in the category -- Here's one and here's the other -- rather than for me. In addition to being an AOL Journaler, I also happen to be a corporate tool -- which is to say AOL hired me to write this journal and keep on top of things in the AOL Journal community and beyond.

So it's actually my job to have a wide variety of subjects here (and it's a good job). The other nominees include a wide variety of subjects solely by their personal inclination -- and I personally believe that's more award-worthy. So thanks for the nomination! Please vote for the other Journalers.

Well, AOL *could* tell me what to write (although they have given me a great deal of latitude in content, and I'm grateful for both the trust and the freedom). But also, there are indeed specific things I need to do here -- such as keep up with the AOL Journal community and act as a conduit between you guys and AOL. So it's a little different. Not much but a little.

John, whether or not you work for AOL shouldn't affect the status of your nomination for the Awards. AOL doesn't tell you what to write. You're just luckier to get a paycheck for it. That doesn't make your journal any less special. I wish you lots of luck! :P

Heh. Well, I do have an entirely separate personal account that I've had for years. THIS account is new, however. Otherwise, what he said.

John makes a very valid point. He's a paid, full-time journalist, with several years of blogging behind him, as well as a published writer in his own right. This is not tour "average" AOL member. In fact, and I am sure John will correct me if I am wrong, John didn't have an AOL account until he was hired to work as the Journals chief cook and bottle washer. While I like his work very much -- it should be excellent as he is a professional.

"i am a bit miffed that you're encouraging voters to vote for someone else .. why not let it be a fair fight?"

Well, you've got some pretty good competition for the other nominee, you know. I think it'll be a fair enough fight between the two of you. I'd just be in the way.
