Hearing Stacy's Mom -- Fountains of Wayne

The Bangles

Picture from Hometown

I don't want to get all retro on you, but that new single from The Bangles, "Something That You Said," is a mighty sweet little tune and well worth the listen. You can hear it (and see the video, incidentally) here.

Also, I'm thrilled that the Bangles are making music again, since it means I can resume my low-grade desire loop regarding Michael Steele, the Bangles' boyishly named bass player. Back in the 80s all the other guys were lolling their tongues over Susannah Hoffs, who (as you'll see in the video) seems today strangely preserved in amber. But I don't know. She was just sort of too obviously doing the kittenish thing for me (and then there was that terrible movie). Michael, on the other hand: Big, tall, luscious-lipped bass playing mama (she sang too, as do all the Bangles). Big crush. Oh yeah. In later days, I moved my female bass player crush over to Hole/Smashing Pumpkins Melissa Auf Der Maur, but it just wasn't the same.

So: Nifty new song and a resumption of a stupid adolescent crush! That's not bad for a Monday morning.

I saw the Bangles live in San Francisco playing an acoustic set to an overflow crowd at Borders, of all places. It was really a fun event. They came across as unpretentious. It seemed more like a folk concert than a standard pop performance. - Bruce
