Hearing My Darling -- Wilco

Prepared to Be Horrified

Weight Watchers recipe cards from 1974. Given these food choices, it's no wonder people lost weight back then. I'm convinced the Fluffy Mackerel Pudding violates the Geneva Conventions. The person who put this exhibit acknowledges a debt to James Lileks' Gallery of Regrettable Food, which if you haven't visited, you should. It's hours of food terror.

Speaking of diet-y food-like substances, this is interesting: A sugar substitute that's not constructed out of space age polymers and is 96% as sweet with only about a third of the calories. I say, bring it on, and soon. I've trained my brain to accept diet soda, but every now and then I'll have a suger-filled soda and my body literally twitches in pleasure, which is every bit as frightening to view as it sounds like it would be. But I can't help it. Your body knows the difference, yo.

The sad thing is I actually attempted to eat said Mackeral Fluff pudding (ours was almost loaf-like) back in the early '70's when presented with same by my covivant. Sad, sad. And stupid! It was inedible, even to the dieting honey.

This example of how adapting your tastes to fake contrived sweeteners may explain the human innate desire for fake entertainment (TV with weak story, laugh track, flat predictable characters, etc...) We become accustom to bad TV so that in the rare occurence good TV happens it is near orgasmic. Mediocrity is the filler that makes good TV better.
