Football Notes

Just for the perverse pleasure of it, allow me to make some football notes.

* Speaking as a resident Ohioan, there is some satisfaction in the Cincinnati Bengals ruining the Chief's perfect record. The first is that the Bengals have been bad for so long that the fact they're in playoff contention has people around here (Dayton, which by geography considers Cincy clubs as its "home" teams) walking around in a pleasantly surprised daze. But also, there's the fact that the Bengals' Chad Johnson did some trash talking earlier in the week, promising his team would take down the mighty Chiefs. This was significant in the fact someone on the Bengals felt confident enough to make the taunt; it was also significant in the fact that the team then backed it up. It may not mean the Bengals are Super Bowl contenders, but for this season at least, you ignore them at your own peril.

* Likewise, for me, there is some satisfaction that the Redskins are 4-6 after this week's loss. I lived in the DC area for a number of years, and I have to say (and considering where AOL is located, I'm risking my job here) that there is no more annoying team anywhere on the face of the earth, from the head office down to the fans and the press coverage. Every loss is like a heart attack, every win is like manna from above. They all need to be hosed down. Although I have to admit, this is pretty funny.

* My fantasy football team, The Mediocre Walloons, has had a four game winning streak, for a Redskins-like 4-6 record, which will officially go to 5-6 once the Monday Night Football game is entered into the books (neither my team or the opposing team has players on the Steelers or Niners). This makes my team positively mediocre. So it's good it's living up to the name. Do you have a fantasy football team? How's it doing?
