Text Length Increases

AOL Journalers: Please don't think that entries like this are going unnoticed. The AOL Journals tech folks are aware that many of the Journalers are bumping up against the text size limit on a not-infrequent basis, especially when they are using different text effects. And they know that it's frustrating for you. So they're doing something about it.

I've mentioned before that AOL is planning to increase character lengths for both Journal entries and comments. Well, now I can give you specifics. In February, as part of a general upgrade of the AOL Journal client (i.e., the software you use to make and display your entries), text lengths will be expanded to 25,000 characters for Journal entries, and to 2,500 characters for comments. That's ten times the current number of characters for entries, and five times the number for comments.

In word counts, that's roughly 4,000 words for an entry and 400 words for comments (give or take for the coding commands). To give you some perspective, 4,000 words is a good-sized chapter length in a novel, or a medium-long article size in a magazine. For most Journal entries you'd want to make, it should be more than enough.

And of course you ask: Why February? I want the longer text lengths now. My understanding here it that it's part of an overall upgrade and they want to put them together as a total package -- which would minimize code conflicts and bugs. It's definitely on its way, however. We knew it was something you'd want to know about.

Ever so glad to hear about the upcoming increase in the character length of journal entries. I do have to say, however, that the enforced brevity of journal entries has made me write more tersely and is a great way to eliminate a shitload of unnecessary adjectives (my own personal bane).

My husband's comment on the increased text length was, "Oh, no. I guess I'm going to have to buy my own computer."

Hooray! I am glad they will be increasing the text abilities. I for one, have a very hard time leaving comments in the short amount of text they allow. I can't wait until February!

Now this is good news indeed. Thanks for passing it along, John!

It might be interesting to note that I was able to post that 6-parter I ranted about after I cut and pasted into Notepad, before cutting and pasting into an Entry.

Thank goodness! Good news for February but that seems like a long time. I don't understand why any character limits at all are needed! If your entry is extremely long and interesting, then there's no reason why you shouldn't be able to make it. If it's long and boring, nobody will read it anyway. I should know. ::snicker::

Yay! it seems like every thing I write I have to break into 2 pieces. The length upgrade will be greatrly appreciated. Hoo! Rah!
