Hearing High Sensitivity -- Ra

Heading Toward the Weekend

Some links to see you off into the weekend:

* Kid foils kidnapping. The idea the family used to protect their kids is really an excellent one. I'll remember it for my own family.

* Ever wonder why those small, thin dudes seem to walk away with all those eating contests? Popular Science has the answer.

* Thoughts on the World Trade Center Memorial proposals, from someone who saw them fall. There's a follow-up bit as well.

* PC Magazine John Dvorak kvetches about blogs; Andrew Sullivan responds. Tribune columnist Mary Schmich likewise kvetches; fellow Trib columnist (and blogger) Eric Zorn responds. As someone who writes online both professionally and amateurly (yes, I know that's not a word), allow me to say: They're all right. Can I go home now?

"> * A small moment of self-promotion: My latest book, Book of the Dumb, is now out; it's a collection of stories of people from all walks of life doing not-so-terribly-smart things. It's available at traditional bookstores and online booksellers. If you're interested and you want a deal on the book, the publisher offers it really cheap here. Before you comment, yes, I'm aware they've spelled "stupidity" as "stipidity" on the Web page. I'm assuming it's intentional, like the backwards "B" on the book cover.

I read John Dvorak's review of blogging. The only line that excited a response from me was, "Big Media is taking over blogs." I thought, "Woo-hoo! EXACTLY what I was hoping for when I wrote my first blog, how do I get my name on one of those big media lists?"

John Dvorak is a tiresome elitist and his remarks about blogging are neither original nor valid. The InterNet has and will change a lot of things - not all for the best but if it cuts a few self important pedants down to size, so much the better!

Yes, some good points made on blogging. Yes, it takes time and there's a small audience (for some of us -- others do quite well.) There's a large dropout rate -- some try it and don't like it or the novelty wears off. Yes, it gets tiresome sometimes.
Why do it? It's fun. It makes me feel good to put my thoughts out there no matter how small the audience. And hopefully, someone will stumble across my journal and be convinced not to vote for Dubya again.
