Van Hagar Returns?

<classic rock geek>

Scroll down to the 11/20 entry at MelodicRock.com and you'll see a rather extensive entry suggesting that Sammy Hagar is reuniting with Van Halen and that the entire group will pop out a new album in 2004, with the attendant tour and hoopla to follow. This is manna from heaven for Halen fans. Admittedly, it's not the long-sought-after reunion with Diamond Dave and the Van Halen brothers, but it's the next best thing, and after that whole Gary Cherone thing, the fans are going to be grateful for what they can get, you know?

(Incidentally, and I'm going to kill myself in the credibility department here, but I think Cherone did as well as could be expected in that situation. Look, you try following up David Lee Roth and Sammy Hagar and see how you do. Give the guy a little credit for being willing to risk a now-win situation, which is exactly what it turned out to be.)

(But aside from that, after Sammy left/was booted, you know who would have been the coolest lead singer they could have picked for Van Halen? Joan Jett. Think about it. You know she would have totally rocked. Search your heart. You know it to be true.)

Like most people who have followed Halen for a while, I'm a Dave guy -- the man is nuts in that certain rock n' roll way -- but I have respect for Sammy. He went in there, took the challenge and I think won over most people with his willingness to make it work. He earned his keep. And if it's true he's coming back, I'm excited to see what he and the rest of Van Halen come up with.

Now if we can just get Journey and Steve Perry to patch things up...

    Steve Perry? No way! Have you seen Journey in the last couple of years with Steve Augeri? He's terrific, and it appears that the band is finally having fun on stage again. Of course, seeing as David Lee Roth can't even sell a club tour on his own, if Sammy gets back with Van Halen, perhaps Perry could fill the other half of the double-bill. The final date could just be a huge intervention to get Perry and Roth into rehab. Again.

    Joan Jett would make Eddie Van Halen look like an awkward little girl. I think that is a match made in heaven.

    Actually, Dave took most of his act from Jim Dandy, singer of 70's band Black Oak Arkansas.
