Hearing Home -- Breaking Benjamin. I'm reviewing the album.
Plink Plink

Is that the first snow of the season? As if! That's hail, my friends, rock salt-sized grains of ice that woke me up at 2:30 am by pelting the roof and the windows. We are expected to get some snow later in the week, and of course other folks in the upper reaches of the Midwest already have their snow -- and seem to like it. James Lileks, in Minnesota, revels in the idea of a White Thanksgiving, and all I can say to that is, man, that's just sick. White Christmas, fine. We had one last year. Very nice. A White Thanksgiving, on the other hand, means that you should be looking down the road for the tongue of the glacier that will nudge your house off the foundation.
At the very least, Mother Nature gave us a nice weekend to prepare for the cold. We took full advantage of it by stringing up the Christmas lights. Normally I'm against any sign of Jesus' birthday party before Thanksgiving, but we knew the cold was coming and the idea of hauling up the lights while the roof was frozen and slick was not appealing. So up they went. We're a little early, yes. But on the other hand we didn't have the lights up November 1, as some people do these days. There's a time for everything, including Christmas decorations, but in my humble opinion, nine weeks out is not really that time.
I'll admit I'm not ready for the cold, but then I never am. Having grown up in an area of the US where the average November temperatures is a frigid high 60s, every time frozen bits of water drop from the sky it upsets my equilibrium. It's just plain wrong. But I've got a mortgage in a snow-bearing state. Too late to worry about it now.
