Hearing Slide -- Goo Goo Dolls
Journal/Blog Roundup 5/12/04
Today is my pal Robert's birthday. Happy birthday Rob!
* It's also Angela's birthday, and today she's got some thoughts about what she's thankful for. This is, I think, and excellent use of one's birthday: Focusing on what is good in life, and preparing for what's coming up next.
* Andrew Sullivan is astounded at how dumb al Qaeda is in its recent horrible action of beheading an American citizen. I agree with this one; whatever these days thought they were accomplishing (other than beheading a innocent), it's only going to make the average American ready to wipe them out. Meanwhile, Dan Drezner considers whether Rumsfeld should resign in the wake of Abu Ghraib (and in a nice bit of circularness, links back to Andrew Sullivan). Whether Rumsfeld should or not, I think it's pretty unlikely that he will; Bush has publicly declared he's Rummy's back, and that's pretty much that, I suspect.
* Who isn't up for a bunch of trucker bloopers? Personally I find it refreshing that the guys driving the huge trucks that could crush my little car like an aluminum can under an elephant's foot have a fine and well-developed ironic sense of humor.
* When Bouncers Attack! That'd be a hit video for sure.
* Sepintx shares a tutorial on how to use an outside FTP client to upload pictures to your AOL Hometown space (presuming you have one). I have to admit that I've tried using outside FTP clients and have had absolutely no luck, and thus generally stick to AOL's antidivulian implementation. But clearly I'm an idiot. If other people can get it to work, more power to them.
* I don't usually link to the same person twice in two days, but Pamie's got a follow-up entry on her engagement ring which is too good not to share. It's, like, spooky.
* What's a Mother's Day Hangover? Time to find out. Yes, I'm mildly behindon this one. But you know, I go through a lot of journals. Sometimes I don't get around to an interesting entry until a little later. Heck, I've got some Easter material here on my list, but... no.
* Google has its own blog, so if you ever wanted slavish recounting of life at this search engine, well, here you go. Knock yourself, kids.
* Megan McArdle read the article I linked to yesterday on how to catch plagiarizers (probably not from this site, however) and has some introspective thoughts on whether we're turning into a nation of cheaters, and wonders if it's actually a true generational thing. Megan's about the same as I am, so by implication she and I would be in the same non-cheating generation. However, anecdotally I don't think we were any less inclined to cheat than any other generation.
As an example, let me tell you about my junior high science class, taught by Mr. Kaufmann. There was the class braniac, which was me (I was the only seventh grader who could tell you right off the top of his head six different ways the earth moves: revolution, rotation, rotation around the center of gravity of the earth-moon system, procession, the motion of the earth as it's carried by the sun and the motion of the earth as it and the sun are carried by the Milky Way galaxy through space), and every time we had a science test, I'd put down an answer, and then the people around be would put down an answer, and then the people around them would put down an answer. Mr. Kaufmann suggested to me at one point that he thought people were cheating off me; I did my best to appear shocked at the suggestion.
So, no, I don't think we cheated any less. I think it's probably easier to cheat now, but that's not the same thing.

I worked out Sepintx's method of using an outside FTP. But then, I'm a genius. [Though still not smart enough to have figured it out on my own.] LoL And it rocks!!!
