Hearing Maps -- Yeah Yeah Yeahs

Journal/Blog Roundup 5/13/04

They say thunderstorms are coming today, so I'm going to try to jam through this before my connection gets cut. Just so y'all know, it's annoying to have an Internet connection that's routinely affected by weather.

* Congratulations and happy anniversary to Slowmo, who celebrates nine years of marriage today. Which means she was married the same year as I was, since Krissy and I will be married nine years next month. Class of 1995 rocks!

* Technology Review blog looks at how digital cameras are recording the 'banality of evil.' Speaking of which, Stephen Green debates on whether he should watch the video of Nicholas Berg. Kevin Drum, meanwhile, is taken aback by one commentator's implication that we may wish to consider using nukes in the Middle East. These are interesting times.

* Freeepeace has posted the cutest dog picture of the day and perhaps of all time. I don't much like small dogs, but I have a weakness for pugs; my grandpa had one, and she was a sweetie. Less cuddly are the pictures she posts of gas prices in California right. I mean, ouch. It's almost enough to make a Californian take (gasp!) public transportation.

* Or maybe people will start driving these instead. Yeah, I expect lot of emergency room visits out of these. Doesn't mean I don't want one.

* Andreakingme vents about extreme lack of customer service. And what are Journals for, if not for full-on venting? It beats walking around the house, muttering to yourself and swinging a baseball bat at the walls. Uh, not that I've ever done that.

* Fun with science: Steven Den Beste as a (typically) long entry about linguistics and a challenger to Noam Chomsky. It's abstruse and I think tries to suggest there should be a grudge match somewhere along the way, which would be fun but not particularly on point. Still, it's interesting if you're into this sort of thing (which I am; my degree in philosophy is specifically in philosophy of language). On the other side of the science quad, Chad Orzel talks about common misconceptions about physics. This is a complementary piece to another "misconceptions about physics" blog entry from another physicist, this one at my own beloved University of Chicago. Kids, don't misunderstand physics! Without it, you'd just be an undifferentiated lump of subatomic particles. And no one wants that.

* Somenuttychic offers an emoticonic tour of her moods.

* Hey, geeks! The official production blog of the movie of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is up. They know where their towel is.

* Museinla offers opinion of various ad campaigns out there, including the one that puzzles me: The drive by KFC to get away from their "fried" reputation. Listen to me closely, KFC executives: If your chicken wasn't fried, I wouldn't be eating it. Everything is better deep-fried. It doesn't mean everything you eat should be deep-fried (that's just a bad idea), but it does mean everything is better that way. Immersing your food in searingly hot oil is a selling point. Celebrate it!

* The resume from Hell. No, really.

Ah hah! I wondered why my emoticon entry had so many hits. (Yeah, I secretly track that stuff with a hidden hit counter. Shhhhh! Don't tell anybody) ;-)
