Hearing I Could Write a Book -- Miles Davis
You've Got Fur!
As many of you know, my dog Kodi is an Akita, which is in all respects an awesome breed -- smart, big, wonderful with children and yet able to bring down a bear if it has to (which fortunately has not been on the agenda). But the thing about Akitas that you must be prepared for is that twice a year they "blow their coats" -- which is to say the shed their fur in such copius amounts that you can literally reach in and pull out a chunk. So how much fur are we talking about? Well, to give you an idea, here's how much fur Krissy brushed off Kodi this morning, with a regular-sized Nerf football for scale:

Mind you, that's one brushing. There were other brushings in the recent past, and will almost certainly be more in the near future.
Makes you want to rush out and get an Akita, doesn't it? Just thought I'd share that little bit of domesticity for you.

Seriously about the dog hair -- it can be spun and woven or knit. It can be combined with some wool or wool + angora (or llama or yak or camel or whatever) hair. It's not unheard of at all, and hey...if you don't want it..... (well, I could take it or heck, you could probably sell it on eBay). ~~GreenTuna

I don't have a dog now but had 3 German shepards and can't remember what they had shed. All I remember were the ticks that looked like rolly polies. Yuck! I do remember my Persian cat had hair all over the place when she would shed. Poor Cocoa, a coyote ate her about 5 years ago. Loved that cat!

Yikes. German Shepherd/Rottie mixes, like my Sasha, don't shed that much but she does do a little. I washed her blanket yesterday and I wish I'd collected the hair. Would have made a lovely sweater.

Have you thought about weaving a rug or something out of this?
