Sharing A Book Moment With You

Now, as I've mentioned here before, when I'm not doing the AOL Journal thing, I also write books. Putting a book together isn't just a matter of writing up a story and sending it off; it's a multi-step process, some of which doesn't actually involve me per se. For example, one aspect of the book process I have very little control over (which means none) is the process of the book artwork. Big-name writers have a say in their covers, but people like me who are just starting out get what we get and have to trust our publishers to do right by us.

This isn't actually a bad thing, mind you: Publishers have a good bead on their book market and know what sort of art work is going to sell a book to the intended audience, whereas the author might not. We're writers, not marketing executives (usually). So trusting the publisher with the cover art is generally both a smart and easy thing to do. And in my particular case, I think it's paid off pretty well, since here is the cover to my science fiction novel which comes out at the end of the year (just in time for the holidays, hint, hint):

Pretty cool. It was done by this guy, who done some other pretty memorable SF and Fantasy book art, and I feel pretty happy to have had him assigned to my book.

Anyway, I just wanted to share a book-making moment with you all. As the book process moves along, I'll tell you more about it so you can get a first-hand account of what it takes to get a book from the brain to the bookshelves.

Great cover, John. I agree that artwise, it would be at home on the cover of a Heinlein novel. I must disagree with floralilia, though, about the fellow looking like you. He kinda reminds me of Bruce Weitz, the guy who played Belker on Hill Street Blues.

At any rate, congrats! I look forward to reading it.

This is exciting following your book coming out! The cover looks good, kinda reminds me of an old Star Trek.

Cool...I've been waiting impatiently to hear when it would be coming out!  The timing is perfect too...now I can put it on my Christmas list and maybe I won't even have to pay for it myself...lol.  I like the cover, I think.  I did sort of think the guy on the cover had a resemblance to you too...just much older and a bit more devious.
