Hearing Walkin' After Midnight -- Patsy Cline
Underwhelmed
People are talking about the cicada swarm (technically known as Brood X), as if it's an actual, you know, swarm, but so far, I've got nothing. They tell me that I should be positively coated in cicadas, but I have yet to see a single one. Krissy and Athena report seeing exactly one of the bugs, but I was not able to verify this with my own eyes. Personally, I think this Brood X is the Comet Kohoutek of the insect world.
Is it just me? Are other people getting pure cicada satisfaction that I'm missing out on? Fill me in on the cicada situation where you are.

I don't understand why "they" whoever they is, says that the cicadas come once every 7 years, thats a crock, we get them every summer in Florida, you can usually find them dead all over your front porch, it takes alot of skill to navigate through cicada death valley aka the ground outside your front door.

We've got them here in Baltimore. In my neighborhood it isn't bad, largely due to the relative lack of trees, but in other parts of town, they're out in true plaguelike numbers.

None near Philly

17 miles east of Baton Rouge Louisiana...no cicadas here that I've heard or seen. But I have a lot of dragonflys and spiders around here.

Trust me, this set of Cicadas were NOT here last year (plus it's actually a 17 year cycle not 7). There are cicadas with different periods that come out more frequently and locus look a lot like the cicadas, but in my area - the noise and numbers of them are unbelievable this year. I think it is an area thing - my sister is closer to the water and doesn't have many at all. Our theory is that they don't like the sandy soil. Maybe the temps aren't right for them were you are - or the soil mosture of something. Just count yourself lucky.
