Issues With Word Cut and Paste

Some AOL Journalers have noticed they have some issues when they try cutting and pasting text from Microsoft Word into AOL Journals. Our team of crack tech investigators have got on the case and discovered the problem.

The problem comes from a feature in later editions of Word itself: A feature that allows users to embed "Smart Tags" into their Word documents. If this option is turned on, problems can arise when you cut and paste into AOL Journals. Now, by default, "Smart Tag" embedding is not enabled in Microsoft Word; however, apparently any number of things can enable Smart Tags in Word documents, and once it's switched on, it tends to stay on. So you'll want to go into Word to see if it's Smart Tags are enabled -- and if they are, you'll want to turn them off. Here's how you do that:

1) Go to the Tools menu.
2) Select "Options...". This is usually the very last item in the menu.
3) Click on the "Save" tab.
4) Find the option named "Embed smart tags". If it is on, turn it off.

Now you should be able to cut and paste with impunity. Be aware earlier versions of Word may not have this feature (I personally use Word 2000, which doesn't).   Take note however that even though you've switched off embedding Smart Tags, it may eventually get switched back on in one way or another. When/if that happens, you'll need to go in and switch it back off again. Hey, don't blame us. We don't make Microsoft Word.   Hope that helps all of you who use Word for composing entries.

    Hi John,
I am having a different problem, mine is with url links. Here is the problem...

I have been trying to link my journals to my homepage. I made buttons and linked them to the address just like everything else but when I go to click on them to see if they work I either get the message that the page doesnt exist or that it is not on that browser. I view and edit my journal with know problem and can even get to it when sending it to myself in an email but as soon as I copy/paste or type the url as a link it doesnt work. Can outside users view our journals if we send a link? Could this be the problem? I would like to share my jourals with people outside of aol also but can they get to the website?

What can I do? Thank you. I hope you have a great vacation.

    Angela

I'm confused.  I've been cutting and pasting from MS Word for most of the time I've been using AOL Journals.  Why is there a problem just now?  And, is there a reason, I might not want to turn off "Smart Tags?"  They must be there for a reason.  I know that AOL would rather have us blame MS, but shouldn't AOL have made a product that works with the biggest Word processor on the market?  Again, why all of a sudden this change.  My MS didn't suddenly change, we're still thinking this is on AOL ... and if they haven't changed their program, they are telling us only a partial truth in remedying a problem they have yet to fix.  Am I terribly wrong here??

Phooey: it didn't help much.  I turned off smart tags, and I still got XML tags identifying nearly every proper noun as a City or State or whatever.  Very annoying for an entry with lots of place names! - Karen (see below).

Excellent!  I was inconvenienced by those not-so smart tags just last night.  Maybe this way I'll also be able to paste into Netscape Composer without all that MS garbage not-really-HTML.

In a related problem, last night I had a heck of a time getting my journal entry out of italics.  I tried pasting it from Word, from an AOL untitled text page, and from Netscape Composer.  Once the first paragraph was in italics, the entry wanted to be italics throughout, and did not respond to formatting buttons.  I forget which program copied it back into partly not italics.  Also I was trying for Times New Roman, but settled for Ariel.

So what's the best way to format the entries? My main concern is that they not come out tiny.

    Thanks...
