More Gifts to the Future
This week's Weekend Assignment asks AOL Journalers to pick out five things to give to a descendant living 100 years in the future. What do they pick? Some weird and wonderful stuff. Here's some more of what's going into their time capsules. I'll give you the name and one of their picks -- click through for the other four:
PLittle: "My VHS copies of the original Star Wars trilogy. The pre-Special Edition ones, because by then George Lucas (who will still be alive) will have succeeded in totally eradicating all memory of his first release of those films. Oh, and a VCR. You know, so they can play them."
Brewerm591: "A cassette player with a tape containing my voice [I just love that idea!]"
Moontoo1314: "CD: Those Were Our Songs, Music of World War II"
Kissofvanity: "My AA welcome chip. Getting clean and sober and staying clean and sober has been a huge accomplishment for me. I am passionate about Alcoholics Anonymous, and the people who are part of it."
Irisflower2: "Photos of my grandparents on both mom & dad's side of the family, just because there aren't many of them to be had and they should be preserved and passed on."
Camaroisle050856: "A letter of hope to future family members, telling of what I envision them to be, and that in spirit we are cheering them on from the other side of the temporal divide of decades."
Goewynn: "My Bible. It's got notes and insights and thoughts I've been scribbling in the margins since I was in high school. My faith is who I am."
Mae120866: "The first personal artifact that sprang into my head -- other than collected poems and letters-- is a videotape of my performance as the Stage Manager in Our Town."
Rhondashkfree: "I would go down and buy a local newspaper from where I live and add that to my Time Capsule."
Pkbeachbum: "Uncle Francis’ memory of D-Day."
Springsnymph, writing from the point of view of the person looking at the time capsule: "We peeked back into the box and saw a small stuffed animal, a river otter. It was the cutest thing we'd seen in a long time. We'd seen these little animals in museums before; it was extremely rare to see wild animals like these anywhere nowadays."
Levi1023: "My flute and music I have collected over the years, in hopes they too will have that love for music they inherited from their early ancestors."
Xeromouse: "My wisdom teeth, cause I have no idea why the doctor gave them back , and I have no idea what to do with them. So why not pass them on!"
Thisismary: "A can of Pledge. Greatest all purpose household product ever invented. Shiner of stainless steel, softener of leather upholstery, counter polish, keeper of water spot free 'facilities.'"
Hopelessblondie: "The letters I write to an older version of myself and to my future husband. They show how I expect people (men esp.) to treat me and anyone I love and what I expect my life to be like at different ages. My journals show how my life was. I think comparing and contrasting them would be interesting."
Angeleyez1970: "I would laminate and presserve a few of my favorite recipes (handed down from my grandmother). I'm sure by then a delicious and fattening "homecooked meal" will be pretty much extinct!"
Buckeyebeauty74: "I would include some of the hottest styles of clothing out right now. I am sure they would have fun with that."
Valphish: "My art box filled with all of my supplies (which is busting out right now. I would also make sure that it has a couple of completed projects in the box. Perhaps a quilt or a painted picture. My art is so much of who I am."
Kkasey47: "I would put the deed to our house in there. They could see how the house I lived in was bought as an old bank and turned into a house and rebuilt by their uncles."
What great stuff! Thanks everyone for coming up with such great things for the future.
