Hearing New York's Not My Home -- Jim Croche

Football!

You know, there are not words in the English language to adequately express how little I care about the game of football, which started its season this last week (AOL-only link; non-AOLers, click here). Honestly, while all y'all are stuck with your eyeballs on the Sunday TV screen, I'm off doing something wacky, like reading or setting fire to trashcans (okay, not so much with the setting fire to trashcans). For all that, football is all but unavoidable in this country, and I can't help having a (very mild) interest in a couple of teams:

* The Washington Redskins. I lived in the DC area for a number of years and the utter fanaticism of the 'Skins fans drove me to gleeful schadenfreude every time the team fell flat and ugly on its face. However, even a cynic such as I can't resist the Second Coming of Joe Gibbs, and his grinding 16-10 debut victory over Tampa Bay.

* The Cincinnati Bengals. The NFL team closest to where I live has been bad so long that when new coach Marvin Lewis actually cobbled together a non-losing season last year, he could have been declared King of Southwest Ohio. I'm sort of interested in seeing if Lewis can keep the momentum going. The first game loss to the Jets wasn't particularly a good sign, but, as they say, on any given Sunday, blah blah blah.

* The Mediocre Walloons. Despite my utter lack of interest in football, I actually have a fantasy football team in a league fun by my friend Stephanie, who is as fanatical about the sport as I am oblivious to it. I just let the computer pick my players and then play what I get, so it completely outrages the other players when I win, because they care and I don't. This lackadaisical approach tends to produce mediocre results (the name of the team isn't just amusing, it's accurate), but for all that I've been playing for three years and I've never missed the playoffs. However, I did get pounded this week. Yeah, I'm going to lose a lot of sleep over that.

How'd your favorite team do? How do you think they're going to do? Or, like me, do you really not care? Share your football thoughts.

You're probably close enough to be a Steeler fan...come on, it's fun! (Actually, I just like the game day munchies, but don't tell my hubby).

My opinion of football is the same as yours.  The only team I have any interest in is my local Kansas City Chiefs, and they're usually such a horrible team that I lose my interest rapidly.
