Hearing Theme to Batman -- Danny Elfman

Food For Mars, Food For Thought

Fascinating article in Wired News about what it takes to prepare food for a trip to Mars. Scientists estimate that it would take about two and a half years to get to Mars and then get back, so no matter what gets included on the trip, you're eventually going to get well and truly sick of it. "Steak -- again?!???!!" Not that they would have steak. Meat. It doesn't travel well unless it's mostly preservatives. And no doubt the first thing the astronauts will want to do when they get back home is strangle the sadistic twit who thought up Tang.

If I were going to Mars, I think I'd worry less about food than simply not going stir-crazy in a dinky spacecraft. If I were the astronauts, I wouldn't agree to step foot into a ship bound for mars until they promised me a big fat interplanetary broadband pipe, and every new movie and album as soon as it came out. Oh, and e-books. Gotta have something to read. Sure, the lag between earth and the spacecraft would mean IM conversations would be difficult, but other than that, I think I'd be sufficiently amused.

You must choose for your mission to Mars: varied food, or a big fat interplanetary broadband connection. One or the other. Which is it?

Hands down - a big fat interplanetary broadband connection.  I need to feed my mind.  The body will survive somehow.  ~Val

    Christie!

I'm just north of Dayton, which is (I think) a little bit up the 75 from where you are at the moment.

Thrilled to hear you're considering a move back to the south. Ohio and/or the US would of course be lucky to have you (for those of you who don't know, she's the proprietress of allthingschristie.com, from which I regularly steal tasty links).

Good luck with the job hunt -- I imagine you'll find something soon.

Unrelated comment but hey....Scalzi...I'm in your hood right now. I am really loving Indian Hill. I have decided I am moving here next year. The job hunt has begun already. It took about an hour for me to fall back in love with the United States and this area in particular is so fascinating.

Where abouts in Ohio are ya?

    Cheers,

    Christie

All that time away from the daily grind really sounds heavenly, with broadband, and books... and a phone would be nice, mailman might be nice... definitely my computer for writing, and paper... lots of paper.

It would have to be the big fat interplanetary broadband pipe..".man does not live by food alone" But I wonder if irradiated food works up there? Do you know? Sandi
