Hearing Into Temptation -- Crowded House
The Place You Live
Here's an interesting thing to play with: This company has chopped up Americans (figuratively -- literally chopping up Americans is against the law) into 66 distinct demographic slices, and says that if you give them a zip code, they'll tell you about the people who live there; and what's more, chances are you fit into that demographic. You can try it out yourself by clicking the link above and entering the zip code; what usually pops out is a collection of four or five demographics, at least one of which may describe you.
I find this stuff fascinating, but I should note I am one of the people for whom the site completely fails to account: My small, rural Ohio town is populated by (unsurprisingly) farmers and blue collar folks, most of whom have not gone to college and who enjoy things like country music and NASCAR, while I'm techno-geek with a philosophy degree and a taste for Brit-pop. Yeah, I'm an anamoly, all right, although if you want to know the truth, I knew that already.
Does the demographier up there categorize you well? Inquiring minds want to know.

I've been working with Claritas data for around 10 years now -- wonderful marketing tool. My town is one of the Norma Raevilles. I'm an anomaly as well, but for a general picture, I've found the data to be very accurate. The profile fits my town very well, and I'm just grateful there are a lot of anomalies out there.

Nope, none of them match me, but that's because the main cultures here are black, hispanic, or asian (mostly Hmong). My area is for the most part not the richest city (average income at $32,000 a year, but that's low for this area), but it does have it's rich people since it is the second biggest city in the state (the biggest being Madison, our capitol). What do you expect in cheese country though, even though my city isn't exactly "country folk."

I like being a fish out of water. Although I think many of my neighbors would fit into the same category as me - and they sure aren't listing us! -Kelly

Hi John-
I have to say that my sister and I were laughing at the description of the one that describes our family to a T. It was so funny. We fall very much into the Fast-Track Families category. That is a pretty interesting site!
