Hearing Pretty Fly (For a White Guy) -- Offspring
Normally I don't refer y'all to links that require registration, but this story is worth the trouble: A Writer Turns to Teaching from the Los Angeles Times. It's the first part of a series of articles on a first year teacher who is idealistically motivated to teach kids, and his struggles when he discovers that a lot of the kids have more troubles than he suspected. It's a reminder of everything teacher have to go through, but also why so many of them keep at it.

Wow, this story was so moving. I praise Acuna for his accomplishments and inspiration. He is very blessed to have such a gifted wife to support him as well. I returned (after only attending 2 semesters in 1980) to college a year ago at age 42 to pursue my dream of becoming a teacher. I consider my passion for children and love of learning my motivation...I dream of inspiring them to love to learn! I still have a long way to go and it's somewhat discouraging at times to juggle a family of 6 (including 4 children: ages 9, 5, 4, 3 ) and a full load of classes and still remember to take care of me. Acuna's story is truly inspirational. I will be following it regularly.
Happy Holidays and God Bless. tam
