Weekend Assignment #43: Your Own Flag

Ready to exhibit your creative side? This week's Weekend Assignment is a fun one:

Weekend Assignment #43: Congratulations, you've become your own soverign state! Design a flag for the United States of You, using no more than three colors and one symbol (the symbol can be of any color). Explain your design choices. Don't worry about actually making the flag -- you can just tell us about it.

Extra credit: make a picture of the flag. Because, let's face it, that's time-intensive.

Here's my flag for Scalziland:

I wish I could ascribe importance to each of the colors, but the fact is, I just like green, black and gold, and I think they look excellent in combination. However, the phoenix does have special import: As most of you know, the Phoenix is a bird which rises from its own ashes, and is therefore a symbol of rebirth. It's a good reminder that even if you're down sometimes, you can always get back up again, and be even better than before.

Interestingly, my daughter wanted to make her own flag as well, and here it is:

Again, pink, purple and black represent her own favorite colors. The owl, as students of Greek mythology will remember, is the animal most associate with the goddess Athena, for whom my daughter is named, so it's an appropriate symbol for her as well.

So, what's your flag? Head to your own Journal or blog, write about it (or make it and show us), and then come back here and leave a link. We'll be looking forward to seeing you fly your own flag!

When you proposed this activity, I was so excited because I love to design things. My first attempt didn't come out so well. It was a cross with a Bible in it, but it was too plain. So, now my flag is more symmetrical and aesthetically pleasing. It's white with a big blue cross in the middle and a dove in the center. There are also olive branches in two corners for added decoration. The white dove represents purity and peace and the cross represents my faith.

I made a flag. It's a black flag with a red L in the middle of it. The L stands for legacy. I believe that the creation of legacies has long gone because of this worlds "evolvement". I'm going to create my own. And, just a small note: if i was the leader of my very own country, the emphasis would be on creating a legacy. This way, people would spend less time commiting crimes and more time trying to create something that they can prosper from.

    John, Blessed Be!
I wish you to make a flag for me that contains "both" the Phoenix (Phenex) and the owl.  I feel they "both" represent who I feel I am.  Let me know if you can do that, please?  Thank you very much.
    Merry Part.

Okay, so I broke all the rules of the assignment.  But not intentionally, I promise.
When you plan a vacation to the Los Angeles and it turns out to be the worst mudslides in 90 years (while back home the weather is in a record-breaking sunny 70s), you can lose track of a few details.

And to complicate matters further, I completed this assignment days after I read it and far, far away from my computer, in a dreary airport cafe.  I think I might be the only one out there who actually did the assignment by hand!  Anyway, here it is in all its incorrectness! Oh well!   :-)
