Hearing Saturday Night -- Ned's Atomic Dustbin
If it's Not Scottish, It's [Expletive Deleted]!!!
The BBC has posted a story about the musical bands the Scots have voted the Best Scottish Bands of all time. The top ten, in order:
1 Belle & Sebastian
2 Travis
3 Idlewild
4 Wet Wet Wet
5 Sensational Alex Harvey Band
6 Simple Minds
7 Teenage Fan Club
8 Bay City Rollers
9 Primal Scream
10 The Proclaimers
My two questions for my largely North American audience:
1. How many of these bands could you name a song/album for?
2. If the Bay City Rollers actually make the top ten of your country's best bands ever list, doesn't it mean your country has failed in some fundamental fashion?
Personally, I'm appalled that The Blue Nile isn't in the top ten (not to mention the Eurythmics!), and that's all I'm going to say about that.

... this is late in the game ...
1. I have dug B&S since the 'If Your Feeling Sinister' ... their latest, 'Dear Castastrophe Waitress' is a winner too ...
2. 'The Man Who' was a could cd that I got from a used bin ...
3. Just heard one of their relases ... from CBC2 radio station ... the song was 'Idea Track' and was pretty decent ... I have added them to my list of people to get, but just haven't yet ...
4. Wet Wet Wet ... a freind has the 'Four Weddings' soundtrack ... not my mug of ale ...
5. ... finally, a 'who the heck' band ... never heard of them ...
6. If you remember 'The Breakfast Club' and Molly Ringwald, you know this band ...
7. I saw this cd in a used cd shop ... and thought this was a Disney confection group whose video I had seen ... since it was only $4 I picked it up ... and was pleasantly surprised ...
8. Didn't the BCR have a saturday morning kids show at one time ..? I remember how huge they were in the 70's ... this listing does them a great disservice ... they were a legitmate band ... not that obscure ...
9. Another questionable listing ... they have made too much trippy dance and slash industrial music that has been used on too many movie soundtracks to warrant such a listing among the truly obscure <though all are of quality ...>
10. Back to the truly annoying one hit wonders ... I wonder if the Proclaimers are still walking those miles to get somewhere ... -
I'm English and have only heard of three of them and they are crap! Take it as a compliment that your country wasn't in that list - I would. Keep smiling.

1.) Well, since you asked: I've got 6 out of 10 for that list. I'm actually listening to B&S's "If You're Feeling Sinister" album, and I'm familiar with Travis ("The Man Who", Idlewild "100 Broken Windows", Teenage Fan Club "Your Love is the Place Where I come from", Bay City Rollers (can't think of a song name at the moment, though), and The Proclaimers (the classic: "I'm Gonna Be").
2.) Also, you're right. The fact that the Eurythmics didn't make the list and yet Bay City Rollers managed too says nothing good about Scotland. -
I really don't understand the Bay City Rollers being voted top ten, but what do we know? In Scotland they may have some huge cult following. Or, all six members of the Bay City Rollers fan club stayed up all night long casting thousands of votes via disguised IP addresses. Of the top ten, I've heard of five, and owned albums by three, including ::ahem:: the Bay City Rollers.
