Hearing Bizarre Love Triangle -- New Order
MiniMac Madness!
Those cute new Mini Macs are beginning to turn up in the darndest places:
In Sloatsburg, New York, Melvin Benzaquen sees the mini as the perfect "brain" for a high-end in-car entertainment system.
Benzaquen is president of Classic Restorations, which has shoehorned several laptops and computers into customers' cars, but sees great opportunity with the mini.
"When I saw the mini -- the dimensions and the specs -- I thought, this is perfect for the car," said Benzaquen. "I'd be surprised if Apple didn't think of installing it in a car, it's so perfect.... You don't have to do anything except mount it and plug it in. It even has voice-recognition built in. It's almost too easy."
I have to admit that I have no earthly reason for needing a Mini Mac, and yet I am sorely tempted to get one; that's good marketing by Apple (or bad judgment on my part, or some combination thereof). I do think the size of the computer is going to be the reason that Apple will end up selling a bunch -- and of course, people will find ways of making that tiny computer do ridiculous things in ridiculous places. I can't wait to see where these things show up next.

What will be interesting are the ways in which people use the innards of the mac mini in new cases (think the George Foreman iGrill: igrill.co.uk, or the fine folks at mini-itx.com). The board for the mac mini is smaller (I think) than the mini-itx board, so it will be good to see all the different places it can go.
