Hearing These Are Days -- 10,000 Maniacs
Video Watches the Blogging Star
My AOL Overlords are interested in seeing how y'all will take to the idea of more multimedia in the AOL Journals -- both here on By the Way as a way of passing along interesting information, and to remind you that you can add links to video you find on AOL to your Journal as well. So, to get this ball rolling, here are two blogging/journaling-related video links to consider:
1. From MarketWatch, a story on people who use their blogs to talk about their personal finance situation. There folks spill on issues of salary, debt and other financial information of a personal nature and let people comment on how they're living their life, in a financial sense. I'm not personally sure this is such a wise move, but then, aside from cute Athena stories and entries about my breakfast, I don't talk much about any aspect of my personal life, and definitely not about my finances in any significant detail. But different strokes for different folks; check it out and consider if you'd be comfortable letting it all hang out on your Journal, financially speaking.
2. A CNN report on how some people -- including a Federal Election Commision official -- have suggested that political commentary on blogs and journals might constitute unpaid political advertising, and thereby might be open to regulation by the FEC. This story. naturally enough, has been making the rounds in the blog world for some times.
It's an interesting theory, but I'm personally very skeptical (as are Senators John McCain and Russ Feingold, who were the motivating lawmakers behind the electoral regulations in question). I generally avoid much political commentary on this Journal, but I'm not so circumspect in other places online, and let's just say I would be deeply amused to have someone suggest that my voicing my personal opinion, per my rights by the First Amendment, constitues a violation of electoral law. I would like to see someone try; I've always wanted an excuse to visit the Supreme Court.
Check out the video links and let me know what you think about both of those stories -- and if you'd like to see more video links here. If you do, I'll add a few more from time to time.

I agree with ryanagi, talk to us when we can embed video, THAT would be cool. As for the rest, more themes and color choices would be nice for those with a flair for that kind of thing, personally I like to skin my browser, Instant Messenger, etc...I'd like to skin my blog just as frequently.
*Thanks for asking. :)

I did an entry a while back where I created a video montage of photos that I took of the snow in Texas. I did a still shot of the first pick and made it so people could click on it to start the video.

Your links say AOL only if your coming from the web like I am tonight. That's a down side as more of us have friends and family reading our blogs who aren't necessarily AOL members. Another downside is that those on dial-up can't share in the fun.
I just recently realized that the AOL By Phone links are for members only too when I tried to listen to yours. I used to do those from time to time too but probably won't as a result of the AOL only function.
Is there anything AOL can do to open these journal perks up to the rest of the world?
Sorry, I'm so windy tonight. :-) ---Robbie -
AOL only offers dialup in my area, but I'm sure people with faster connections would enjoy them.
Features that I'd love to see added to our journals would be spell check, default font, and more pre-made color/theme schemes for adding flair to the journals of the not so computer savvy people such as myself. That is my little wish list. :D -
I am still on dial up, videos take too long to load.
