Hearing Lovecats -- The Cure

Dance Dance Dance!

Picture from Hometown

The big activity in the Scalzi household recent is Dance Dance Revolution, the video game in which you score points by dancing along with music on the screen, and press buttons on the floor pad in time to music. Aside from being a lot of fun, it's also astoundingly good cardio -- if you're not sweating as you're hopping along, there's probably something wrong with your sweat glands, and you should really get that checked.

It may surprise you to know that the best DDR player in the house is... me. I actually rock at the game, consistently racking up the high scores and getting "A"'s in the game gradings. The reason for this has nothing to do with growing up with videogames (which, when I was playing them as a kid, at least, were somewhat antithetical to actual movement), but because I took two years of dance classes in high school (why? Well, let's see. Spend my afternoons dancing with pretty, athletic girls or getting pummeled by sweaty boys in PE class. Gee, why would I choose dance?). So for the moment, I am the Dancer Master, yo.

Not for long, however. What you see here is Athena celebrating her first "A" grade on DDR -- that means she hit all the buttons basically on time to the beat. She is naturally enthused about achieving this new plateau of competence. Thing is, as she is six and her foot-eye control is only getting better (while I am 35 and, well, you know), sometime in the next couple of months she's going to regularly clean my clock in DDR, the first of many things that my daughter will soon be able to do better than me.

And good on her. As a parent, you want your kid to do better than you, even in something as fundamentally silly as DDR. And naturally, one wants to encourage one's children they can do better, both than you and than they have done previously. Especially when they are as enthusiastic about their success as Athena is here. Dance, Athena! Dance!

This is an awesome game. Our friends daughter had it at her graduation party, and in my opinion, was the biggest hit! There was a line of kids dying to try it! By the end of the evening, they were having team challenges and playoffs! Not to mention, a King Dancer! It was worth every penny!
