Answering AIM Blog Questions

Well, it didn't take long at all for people to start asking questions about AIM Journals, so I'm dedicating this entry for those questions. I'll be updating this with answers as the questions come in --

1. Can AOL Journalers and AIM Bloggers comment on each others' journals and blogs?

Yes. The AIM Blogs and the AOL Journals use the same blogging tool, so all the comment functionality of one is on the other. From a usage standpoint, it's all the same. So comment away!

2. Does it matter which version of AOL you have to use AIM Blogs?

No. Many AIM users don't subscribe to AOL, so it wouldn't make sense to require the AOL software. What you do need is a recent browser. I've looked at my AIM Blog on PC and Mac, and on PC it works with the most recent versions of Internet Explorer and Firefox. On Mac, it works with Firefox; Safari will let you do basic type entry but not links and such. I've asked for the exact specs and will post them as soon as I get them.

Update: Here are the browsers AIM Blogs supports:

MSIE 5.5 and higher
Netscape Navigator 7.0 and higher
Mozilla 1.0 and Higher (this includes Firefox)
Apple Safari 1.1 and higher

3. How can I add pictures on an AIM Blog?

AIM Blog users have access to You've Got Pictures ("YGP" for short). Click on the Add Pictures button on the Add an Entry page, and you'll be taken to the YGP tool that will allow you to upload pictures to YGP and then use them in your AIM Blog. This is pretty easy to do.

Slightly more complicated: If AIM Bloggers already have pictures on AOL Hometown (by having created earlier Web pages with 1-2-3 Publish or Easy Designer) they can add them by clicking on the Add Pictures from Hometown link on the Add an Entry page. They can also upload pictures to AOL Hometown by using 1-2-3 Publish (on the Mac or PC) or Easy Designer (PC only) and then going back and clicking on the Add Pictures from Hometown Link. This is possibly more trouble than it is worth.

Third option: If you've got the picture online elsewhere, copy the URL for the picture, and then click the Add Image button on the Add an Entry page (it's the little button that has a camera icon it) and enter the picture's URL. That'll add it directly to the entry.

4. Can I use AIM to Update my AIM Blog?

Yes. Just as AOL Journalers can update their Journals with instant messages, AIM Bloggers can too, and in the same way: By send you entry via text message to screen name AOL Journals. That screen name is attached to a tool that will turn around and post your words to your AIM Blog. Perfect for when you're in a rush or on the go. Blog entries sent this way have full formatting functionality, even on Mac.

More questions will be posted (and answered) here as I get them!

Brandi and Ryan asked the question I was thinking about...right now I have an AOL journal, but I'm writing somewhere else, since I was going to suspend my service (but I didn't yet).  So I'm curious about that too...can we use our AOL journals on AIM if we don't have our AOL accounts??  Or is that in the works, as I have heard?
    Waiting for your response...Annie

Ooooh RyanG took my question. Please do tell. :D At one point we were going to get rid of AOL but we ended up keeping it just so I had my outlet. That is a great question. :D

Here's one...if we leave AOL, can we use our screen names for AIM and keep our current journal, just with advertising added?
