Hearing Drive My Car -- The Donnas
Look! It's the list of the most expensive colleges in the country! Number one on the list: Landmark College, which serves students with learning disabilities, at over $37,000 a year for tuition and fees. The lowest amount on the top ten list is still over $33K. Yow.
I'll note that one college I was accepted to when I was applying for colleges is on the list: Bennington College, which clocks in at #8 with fees of $33,570 a year. I always wonder what I would have been like if I had gone to school there and not at the University of Chicago. I suspect I would now be living in Brooklyn, writing serious, angst-filled novels. Which sounds kinda fun, actually. Although not nearly as much fun as I'm having now. I made the right choice for me (and, apparently, for my debt load).

College is necessary in today's world, but it should be something that is affordable. I was accepted to a couple of private colleges at different points in my life, but I ended up going to Kennesaw State University (a college not on the list). I was made fun by several former friends because of my choice, but I've found that my less expensive education is serving me quite well (note that I am making a good living teaching at a local technical college while those that mocked me are working low-end, manual labor-type jobs).
It doesn't matter if you attend Harvard or, in my case, "Harvard in the Pines." What does matter is what you do with the education you can pay for. I may not have paid a kazillion (a college educated person can make up words like this) for my education, but I have applied what I learned during my time in college. That makes the real difference.

I don't agree that it's not needed. However, one does have to wonder at what point it begins to cost too much.
