Weekend Assignment #83: Your Halloween Story

Boo!

Man, I love that photo. No, I don't really look like that. As far as you know, that is. But it sure sets the tone for this week's Weekend Assignment:

Weekend Assignment #83: Tell us a scary Halloween story... that happened to you. What I'm looking for here is a story where you were spooked or scared by someone or... something... in or around Halloween (or, alternately, a story where you spooked the heck out of someone else). Please note I don't want stories in which you or others were genuinely in danger -- I'm talk about you getting one big BOO! moment, which, after you were able to get your heart back into your chest, resulted in you saying something along the lines of "Don't do that!" to whomever was giving you a spook. A fun frightening, in other words.

Extra Credit: The song "Monster Mash": Fun or lame?

My big Halloween fright happened when I was about 10, and went trick or treating with some school friends in their neighborhood, which I didn't know very well. We went to a house where the people were handing out goodies, and at the door was this mannequin painted up in a spooky way, and it looked very realistic. I said so to the person who was giving out candy, and he invited me to get a closer look at the thing.

So I got up real close, to get a real good look... and of course the mannequin leaped up and yelled, being not a mannequin at all, but some guy sitting very still, waiting to scare the bejeebers out of little kids just like me. And it worked, since I sprinted off screaming and I don't think I stopped screaming until I was about six streets down. It was funny later, but at the time I remember just being glad I hadn't wet myself. Yeah, that was a very good spook.

"Monster Mash": I know people who love it. I mean, love it. But I just can't get into it. I think it's pretty goofy and stupid. And always have.

You're up: Write up your story of Halloween spookifying on your blog or journal, and then come back to leave a link. It'll be just like telling ghost stories... online!
