Hearing Eyes on the Prize -- Bruce Springsteen
How expensive is gas in California? Expensive enough that people are intentionally letting their cars run out of gas:
"Every time fuel goes up, we start noticing it. But right now we are noticing it a lot more," Andy Lujan, owner of California Coach Towing in Orange County, said Tuesday.
Lujan's 20 trucks roam the busy freeways of Orange and Los Angeles counties as part of a publicly funded patrol that gives a free gallon of gas to drivers who have run out of fuel. It also offers other basic assistance to drivers whose vehicles have broken down.
"You say to some of them 'hey, you've run out of gas' and they say 'yeah, it's too expensive.' I think the percentage is going to increase," Lujan said.
That's just nuts. Also, I imagine sometime fairly quickly this "free gas" program will start keeping track of cars so that people who pull this trick on a regular basis will be told that, sorry, they've gotta pay for their gas like everyone else. Regardless, it's an interesting indication of how much gas prices are pinching people's lives.

This is so funny. I wrote about beans this morning.

It's insane here in California! I buy the cheap gas (there is no difference--believe me), and it's $3.09 a gallon. I hear Exxon reported to have the "best year" ever. Something is wrong with this picture, but would I just let my car go empty? Noo..that would just be a little too irresponsible. Julie

For the first time, I went against my hubby's wishes and purchased a lower grade of gas. I'm not going to tell him. I didn't want to spend the $0.20 extra a gallon for the higher grade. If I could get a free gallon of gas, I would also run my car out.

We hit $3.39 at a station here in Berkeley the other day. I saw when Bush hits the 27 percent mark...we sell!
