Hearing Blue Passion -- Neal Schon
People come up to me, like, every day, and they say, hey Scalzi, you seem like just the sort that would stupidly abuse hormones in a quest to develop the ultimate weightlifting body -- so why don't you? And then I say, well, to tell you the truth, it's because I don't want to have take other drugs to avoid growing breasts:
Some bodybuilders abuse the cancer drug tamoxifen to negate the breast-boosting effects of steroids, University of Glamorgan researchers found.
Steroids are derived from testosterone, but if levels of the male hormone are too high in the body, it is converted into oestrogen and men grow breasts.
Just. Like. Meatloaf.
Also, has a handy tip, if you talking so much testosterone in a quest to become manly that you come out the other side and your body starts becoming womanly, that's a subtle signal that maybe you need to take a step back, go outside, get some fresh air, and then check into some sort of rehab situation. Because, dude, you're just waaaaaay far out there.
I only say these things because I care, you know?

It happens all the time, Tee.
Check out the Chinese or East German women's swim teams from back in the day (China was getting clowned as recently as the period before the last summer olympics)... or check out some of our own Olympic sprinters.
ESPN did an article that focused on the "masculinization" of the juicers- facial hair growth, altered periods, deeper voices, back acne, and hair loss. This is on top of the liver damage/heart attack/stroke stuff you see a few years after NBC stops canonizing them.
While it's hard to differentiate between steroid side-effects and someone who does absolutely nothing but train for the 100 meter dash or the breaststroke, the funniest side effect I saw personally was the really broad backs of the Chinese swimmers. -
What happens if a woman abuses steroids?
